Charlotte’s Web Announces Completion of One of Three Hemp Studies
Charlotte’s Web Holdings, Inc. announced on July 30th that the company’s CW Labs science division and Colorado State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences (CSU) have completed the first of three collaborative hemp metabolomic studies to determine the complex chemical profile of full spectrum – Decipher hemp extracts. made from the company’s patented hemp varieties.
Researchers continue to study cannabinoid profiles in hemp extracts under different strains and conditions. The studies investigate the extent to which environmental conditions, geographic regions, harvest times and various extraction methods influence the resulting phytochemical profile of the hemp plant and its botanical extracts.
In Phase I of the investigation, it was explicitly analyzed how processing and extraction protocols for the hemp harvest can be standardized in order to create a consistent chemical profile. Under the supervision of Dr. Jessica Prenni, Associate Professor in the Department of Horticulture at the CSU, the PhD student Janina Bowen researched the company’s own hemp extracts in the Prenni Laboratory of the College of Agricultural Sciences.
“This is one of more than a dozen third-party scientific studies that Charlotte’s Web is conducting on the effectiveness and safety of our hemp extracts,” said Deanie Elsner, CEO of Charlotte’s Web, in a press release. “We are committed to advancing the science of hemp to support personal health and wellbeing through these collaborative research. We are honored to have Dr. Prenni and the Colorado State University team. “
In Phase I of the studies, the CSU team worked with researchers at Charlotte’s Web’s CW Labs to test hemp extracts for phytocannabinoids, terpenes, and other compounds.
Dr. Prenni is Associate Professor in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at CSU’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Senior Researcher in Hemp Chemistry Studies in association with Charlotte’s Web Inc. (CNW Group / Charlotte’s Web Holdings, Inc.)
“We are very excited to have the opportunity to work with Charlotte’s Web to help build the knowledge base around the full spectrum hemp extract products,” said Dr. Jessica Prenni from the CSU.
Dr. Prenni received her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Colorado, Boulder, followed by postdoctoral training at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. With over 18 years of experience in biological mass spectrometry, she was also director of the Proteomics and Metabolomics Core Facility at the CSU for over ten years.
Phase I has been going on for more than two years and the research will shortly be formally reviewed and published.
The real mission behind Charlotte’s Web
As many know, the strain and company Charlotte’s Web were originally named after Charlotte Figi, who passed away on April 7, 2020 at the age of just 13. Figi inspired the namesake and inspiration behind the acclaimed high-CBD strain Charlotte’s Web, as well as the company and brand.
Charlotte and her twin sister, Chase, were born in Colorado on October 18, 2006. Charlotte had seizures when she was only three years old, then she was diagnosed with Dravet Syndrome – a rare and debilitating disease. She has been prescribed a variety of drugs with little, if any, success. Her seizures were constant and long-lasting, ending up in the hospice when she was only five years old.
Charlotte’s mother Paige refused to accept her daughter’s diagnosis without a fight and experimented with CBD to combat her devastating seizures. Paige was eventually approached by professional cannabis breeder Joel Stanley. They worked together to create a high-CBD, low-THC strain – when Paige administered the resulting oil, Charlotte went from 300 seizures per week to a few episodes per month. It was a dramatic improvement that no one expected.
Paige was not only committed to helping her own daughter, but also helping other children who suffered from persistent epilepsy. Charlotte eventually became the figurehead of CBD and was featured in several supporting cannabis documentaries in 2019 and in our own issue of Female 50 of the High Times.
