CarMax employee reportedly caught transporting three pounds of marijuana to work
When in doubt, it’s probably not a good idea to send felony-equivalent amounts of marijuana to your place of work — especially not on your day off.
A box containing about three pounds of cannabis, addressed to a CarMax employee in Gastonia, North Carolina, was found in a package from a used car dealership, according to the Gastonia Police Department (GPD). CarMax employees regularly receive packages at work, but that particular box was suspicious enough that they wanted to investigate. The box was shipped from a location in Hollywood, California where weed is legal, albeit not in as large quantities.
Unfortunately, CarMax employee Michael Williams, 39, was not at work on the day the package arrived so he was unable to hide it to keep it under wraps. Williams’ colleagues called authorities when they found the box, and police confiscated the pot.
Local police officers weren’t done, however: They refilled the box with three-pound weights to mimic bags of weed, and tricked Williams into incriminating himself. This was the evidence they needed to subpoena him and send him to jail.
“[We] put some items in the box, which weighed about three pounds, resealed the box and waited for the suspect, Mr Williams, to come to work to collect the package,” GPD’s Rick Goodale told the Charlotte Observer. The GPD released a photo of what appeared to be three-pound vacuum-sealed bags that were in the package.
When Williams returned to CarMax to report to work for his next shift, he confirmed the package was for him. Police officers then arrested him on May 22nd.
California allows adults 21 and older to possess cannabis, but only 28.5 grams of personal cannabis without a special license. Also, shipping marijuana across state lines is always taboo. It is unusual to find cannabis in this quantity in a person’s workplace.
“Mostly it’s going to houses, it’s very unusual going to a company,” Goodale said.
GPD police officers assume that Williams’ mission has been going on for some time.
Williams is out on bail after posting bail. In North Carolina, 1.5 ounces to 10 pounds of cannabis is a felony, with prison terms of three to eight months and a $1,000 fine, according to NORML.
CarMax on the test bench
CarMax tried to distance itself from Williams, saying that he was not directly employed by them, just a contractor. Last Wednesday, they released a statement that said, “CarMax is built on integrity and the right to do what is right, and we appreciate the quick response from the local police department.”
Hiring contractors can be beneficial when workloads fluctuate, but it also offers companies the opportunity to avoid being awarded additional benefits.
While finding lemons is common in CarMax, finding grass in a specific location is something entirely new.
According to The Lemon Firm, CarMax is under increased scrutiny due to the large number of complaints that lemons are being sold at its dealerships. The Lemon Firm was founded by Michael H. Rosenstein, one of the top lemon litigators in California.
In some cases, CarMax customers reported that they were not informed that the vehicles they purchased had been involved in accidents or had other major damage. Others claim CarMax misrepresented the current condition of the cars, leading them to believe they got an excellent deal. Read what some Reddit users had to say about the situation.
