Now that the third quarter is complete, we would like to share our quarterly summary of which states have issued the most dispensary/retailer licenses and get a sense of the number of stores in the US. As we saw in the second quarter, New York, Michigan and New Jersey were the largest emitters. Ohio and Puerto Rico joined in the third quarter.
Key findings
- There were 535 new store licenses issued in the third quarter, compared to 456 in the second quarter
- Five states accounted for 73% of these licenses: New York, Ohio, Michigan, New Jersey and Puerto Rico.
- Oklahoma lost 118 dispensary licenses in the third quarter
Here are the top five states that issued store licenses in the quarter:
License numbers skyrocketed in August and September. August was the high point of the last twelve months with 242 newly issued licenses.
Here's an even longer review by quarter. It's interesting to see that the newly released numbers have increased over the last year.
Diploma
Business continued to grow in the third quarter. Overall, the number of branches grew by 3.7%. If we exclude Oklahoma, the total number of deals increased by 12%.
We expect these numbers to increase – especially as Delaware, Kentucky and Minnesota move forward with their licensing plans.
