Are you ready for hemp-based meat? New meat alternatives on the world market
With more people giving up red meat and looking for healthier, more sustainable options, we now have access to so many meat alternatives. All meat alternatives on the market are designed to mimic the experience of eating red meat and chicken. Many of them market to consumers to appeal to those trying to live more sustainable and healthier lives.
But there’s a surprising alternative: hemp-based meat.
Why hemp-based meat?
Sure, there are many options when it comes to meat alternatives.
These include jackfruit, tempeh, tofu, soy meat, and more. So why would a hemp-based meat alternative fit well into the market offering?
Well, hemp is known for its superior nutritional profile, especially when it comes to protein, which vegetarians and vegans are notoriously lacking in their diets. About 25% of hemp seed calories come from protein, which is about the same as lamb and beef and more compared to other meats. In addition, hemp seeds are already a complete source of protein, which is extremely rare in the plant world. Just by consuming hemp-based foods, you can already get a large amount of essential amino acids from your diet.
And that’s not all: hemp is also rich in all the essential fatty acids and healthy fats to keep you healthy; These include magnesium, potassium, iron, vitamin E, zinc, sulfur and sodium.
The problem, however, is that many meat alternatives contain dangerously high levels of sodium and fat to make it tastier. Other plant-based proteins are not very bioavailable due to the presence of phytates and lectins, which are antinutrients. There are also many people who are allergic to gluten and soy.
This leaves those who want better, tastier, and truly healthy meat alternatives wanting more.
And that’s why using hemp-based meat alternatives is so much better.
Planet Based Foods
A company called Veiji Holdings Ltd. issued a press release sharing plans for their innovative vegan hemp protein food products through the Planet Based Foods brand, which will sell their products through Veiji’s digital marketplace. Veiji already offers thousands of sustainable food and life products that empower people to live more sustainably. They have identified hemp-based protein as a significant emerging market that also produces excellent quality meat alternatives.
“Veiji has built a unique community within the sector that shares our mission to make healthy, vegan-certified products more widely available,” said Braelyn Davis, President and CEO of Planet Based Foods. “Our selection of delicious plant-based meat alternatives is a perfect fit with Veiji’s growing portfolio of sustainable products and we look forward to introducing Planet Based Foods to their loyal customer base.”
“We are very excited to welcome Planet Based Foods to our family of sustainable, vegan-certified brands,” said Kory Zelickson, CEO of Veiji. “Partnering with innovative companies committed to shared sustainability goals is critical to Veiji’s growth as we continue to build the world’s largest marketplace for plant-based products.”
They have an exciting selection of hemp meats that have already been prepared for burgers, tacos, pizza and even breakfast sausage.
victory hemp
Victory Hemp Foods is a Louisville-based business-to-business food processing company working to develop innovative technologies to convert hemp seeds into proteins and oils used in food and beverages and cosmetics.
They just made it onto a prestigious list of 22 startups to watch in 2022.
“Traditionally, hemp seed oil and protein were gritty and had a strong earthy flavor that wasn’t popular with food formulators or mainstream consumers,” Aleah Rouse, director of marketing for Victory Hemp Foods, told Producers Market. “And that’s where we started to focus on the hemp heart.”
Sustainable Food
Sustainable Foods, a New Zealand-based producer of hemp-based meats, announced last year that they intend to boost exports within the Asia-Pacific region over the next five years. They previously sold under the name The Craft Meat Co. but eventually changed it to better suit their ethos.
They creatively changed their product name to plan*t and chick*n, strategically placing the asterisks to reflect their core values of nutrition, protein, sustainability and New Zealand origin. “We realized that we need to get our meaning across to consumers well and that ‘The Craft Meat Co’ just doesn’t describe that well enough anymore – it talked more about what we are not than what we are, what’s planned* t,” Justin Lemmens, CEO of Sustainable Foods, told Food Navigator Asia.
Their white meat alternatives are known as chick*n. “Chick8n was designed to do anything chicken would do and we are very proud to have brought this to market with Hell Pizza. We’re also working on an upcoming national launch with TANK in salads and wraps, and it’s delicious in burgers too,” Kyran Rei, business development manager and co-founder, told Food Navigator Asia. “The goal really is to replace every occasion where chicken is used with Chick*n – best described as being like a piece of chicken breast or drumstick, only with health benefits like high fiber content, little.” saturated fat and others to hemp, which is a complete source of protein that also has cardiovascular, neurological and anti-inflammatory benefits.”
bottom line
Hemp protein products are already widely available, but hemp meat is not yet. These are exciting additions to dietary options for people who want to eat less or no meat, for whatever reason. Given hemp’s superior nutritional profile, it’s easy to see why so many more people are turning to it.
