Cannabis and Psychedelics – New study says cannabis can intensify the psychedelic experience for patients

Using marijuana with psychedelics intensifies the mystical experience, study results – marijuana moment

However, psychedelics and cannabis have long been consumed in parallel – the effects have hardly been studied due to the extreme ban. Still, studies are warranted as breakthroughs have been made in psychedelics – particularly those related to mental health – and the normalization of cannabis use on a global scale.

A recent study looked at the subjective effects of psychedelics when cannabis is ingested during an experience. After reviewing the surveys of 321 participants, initial analyzes of the data suggest that cannabis enhances the “mystical experiences of psychedelics”.

Of course, further studies are warranted as the data are purely subjective and the researchers were not physically on site to observe the dose or frequency – however, it does suggest that some data suggest these substances may work together to create one deeper and longer impact to achieve lasting experience.

You could have just asked a few psychonauts and told you this without going through the data, but science is so slow.

In this article, we take a closer look at the results of the study and some insights from psychonauts on how to properly use cannabis and psychedelics together.

Let’s first take a look at the study …

For this study, 321 participants were asked to complete an online survey at two points in time. The first survey took place seven days before a scheduled event and the second the day after.

Here is the methodology that is explained in the paper;

The participants (n = 321) took part in a series of online surveys at 2 points in time: 7 days before and 1 day after a planned experience with a serotonergic psychedelic. The data collected included demographics, environmental factors (so-called setting) and five validated questionnaires: Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ), visual subscales of the Altered States of Consciousness Questionnaire (ASC-Vis), Challenging Experience Questionnaire (CEQ), Ego Dissolution Inventory (EDI ) and Emotional Breakthrough Inventory (EBI). The participants were grouped according to whether they had indicated that they did not consume cannabis (n = 195) or a low (n = 53), medium (n = 45) or high (n = 28) dose directly with the psychedelic. Multivariate Analysis of Covariance (MANCOVA) and Contrasts was used to analyze differences in subjective effects between groups while checking for potentially confusing contextual “attitude” variables. – SOURCE

As you can see, despite the subjectivity of the topic, it is a very robust questionnaire. Nonetheless, the researchers compiled the data and found that:

  1. When serotonergic psychedelics and cannabis were consumed at the same time, there was a higher prevalence of mystical experiences.

  2. There was a linear relationship between the Mystical Experience Questionnaire, Altered States of Consciousness Questionnaire, and Emotional Dissolution Inventory.

  3. There was a quadratic relationship to the Challenging Experience Questionnaire

In other words, the researchers found that there was a direct relationship between the dose and potency of cannabis when smoking cannabis. When people smoked, they had a greater “mystical experience” that was directly related to the potency of cannabis.

When it came to challenging experiences, the researchers found that lower doses of cannabis actually minimized the intensity of the “challenging experience,” while higher potency cannabis increased the intensity of the experience.

As always, the researchers mentioned that more controlled studies are warranted to examine the relationship between mixing psychedelics with cannabis.

How a Psychonaut Consumes Cannabis During a Psychedelic Experience …

A psychonaut has a psychedelic experience on purpose. Perhaps when you are younger – you only use LSD or psilocybin for the sake of experience – but as you grow more mature in your travels, you begin to use those experiences to perform “identity operations”. By playing around with the set and setting, you change the nature of a trip.

During these experiences, cannabis can help you in several places;

  1. Beginning

  2. summit

  3. Decreasing

Anyone who has ever taken a psychedelic has a feeling of fear associated with it. It’s almost like jumping off an airplane while skydiving or bungee jumping off a bridge. They know the experience is mostly safe – but there is always the risk that the dose will either be too strong or you may not even be taking the medications you think you are taking.

This is especially true within the unregulated market, where psychedelic substitutes are often sold as “real things”.

Nonetheless, the fear lingers until you take it – and then, while waiting for the medication to work, you may experience a little more fear. After about 10-15 minutes, it’s a good idea to smoke a little cannabis to calm your nerves, but also to “kickstart” the experience.

Often times, all it takes is a small boost from cannabis – a familiar high – to ride it into the psychedelic experience.

This onset can be rough at times, especially with things like psilocybin or mescaline. Psilocybin can give you nausea, which in some people makes them vomit. It almost feels like gravity is reversing or you get seasick.

Cannabis allows you to lessen these negative effects by allowing the substance to take root – and then, once the onset has subsided, the trip usually begins.

In the first few hours you will climb to the top of the experience. During this time, you may or may not want to smoke cannabis, and usually – when you reach the peak of the experience, people tend to reach for a little more cannabis.

This is to help “calm them down” while “increasing the intensity of the visual / experience”. Cannabis is strange that way.

During the climax, most people smoke to keep their “travel fears” low – as some of the images can feel a bit intense and overwhelming.

Finally, as the experience wears off, smoking a little more cannabis can help you support some longer-lasting visual or physical sensations. It helps to lengthen the experience. Of course, drinking alcohol can do the same thing – but the strain on the body is much harder.

Cannabis has long been used as a companion drug in psychedelic experiences. While science is only now interested in these topics, perhaps it would be in its best interest to seek insights from psychonauts to guide their studies. We may not have the cold hard data – but we’ve logged thousands of trips over the year and have an intuitive grasp of how to handle things.
