Can you take an e-cigarette or vape on a plane?
There are plenty of vape pens on the market, whether they contain THC, CBD, nicotine or some kind of herbal tea.
If you enjoy vaping and have a flight coming up, you're probably wondering if you can take e-cigarettes on the plane.
In this article, Fifth Ave Green House discusses how you can fly with your vape pens and e-liquids.
Can you take an e-cigarette on a plane?
Electronic smoking devices such as vape pens and e-cigarettes contain lithium batteries and are considered dangerous goods due to the risk of smoke, fire and extreme heat.
Therefore, when preparing for a trip by plane, they are limited in terms of packing.
According to the TSA, you can take your e-cigarette or electronic cigarette on the plane, but only in your carry-on baggage, not in your checked baggage.
Each lithium-ion battery must not exceed 100 Wh in watt-hours (Wh); for lithium metal batteries, the lithium content must not exceed two grams. You also cannot charge the device or batteries during flight.
If you don't follow this rule, your devices may get lost when baggage handlers x-ray them. They may even forget your luggage at the departure airport. Therefore, it is recommended to take your vape devices on board in your carry-on luggage.

Why am I not allowed to take an e-cigarette in my checked baggage?
Vape pens are not allowed in your checked baggage because the temperature in the cargo hold of airplanes is not regulated.
Depending on the weather and flight pattern, temperatures can drop below freezing or rise to comfortable levels. There have already been explosions of lithium-ion batteries in the cargo hold, causing fires caused by exploding lithium-ion batteries. People have been injured.
These chemical-started fires also release toxic fumes, making even firefighting dangerous for the crew.
How do I pack my e-cigarette safely in my hand luggage?
“Passengers must take effective measures when transporting the devices to prevent accidental activation of the device’s heating element,” the TSA website states.
Here are some ways from the FAA to ensure your vaporizer and its batteries are not accidentally activated:
Remove the battery from the electronic smoking device;
Disconnect the battery from the heating coil;
Place the electronic smoking device in a protective case;
Use a protective cover, safety latch or locking device on the heating coil activation button of the electronic smoking device.

Unlike vape pens and batteries, vape liquids and other liquids can be carried in checked baggage or carry-on luggage as long as they meet certain requirements and are packaged according to TSA regulations.
Your e-liquid is subject to the general 3-1-1 liquid carry-on rule, introduced by the TSA in 2006, which essentially requires the following:
3 – All liquids in carry-on baggage must be packed in bottles with a capacity of no more than 3.4 ounces (or approximately 100 milliliters).
1 – All of your liquid bottles must fit into a single, clear, zip-top bag and must not hold more than 1 quart.
1 – Each passenger is only allowed one bag of at least one quart in size.
By following these guidelines, you can streamline the security process and ensure that you can carry e-liquids on an airplane without any problems.
You can store the rest of your e-liquid in your checked luggage, but make sure to pack it well and secure it so that any accidental spills don't result in soaked, ruined clothing.
Can you take THC or CBD oils on a plane?
The legality of THC varies in each state. However, at the federal level, it is illegal to transport cannabis or concentrated forms of it (like THC oil cartridges) on domestic and international flights. If you are caught with cannabis, you could face jail time.
CBD products are available in various forms such as CBD oil, Delta-8 gummies, Delta-8 cartridges, etc. It is perfectly legal to fly with any product containing CBD as the THC concentration is less than 0.3%.
It is important to note that “TSA security officers do not search for marijuana or other illegal drugs, but if an illegal substance is discovered during the security screening, the TSA will refer the case to a law enforcement officer.” This means that the TSA will not actively search for your THC oils.
Do whatever you want with this information. For example, remove any packaging or labels that might indicate that your vape is a THC or cannabis product.
In addition, you could get into serious trouble if you try to smuggle cannabis or other drugs across international borders.
In the US, you may be able to travel with cannabis or THC vaporizers with impunity, but in many countries, including France, it is illegal.
Are you allowed to take an e-cigarette with you when traveling abroad?
If you are traveling to a country where vapes are legal, you are allowed to take them on international flights.
If you are traveling to a country where e-cigarettes are not legal, you will need to check the specific policies for visitors bringing e-cigarettes.
From March 2024, the sale of e-cigarettes will be banned in at least 37 countries.
Including Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Australia, Bhutan, Brazil, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Colombia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gambia, India, Iran, Japan, North Korea, Kuwait, Lebanon, Mauritius, Mexico, Nepal, Nicaragua, Oman, Panama, Qatar, Seychelles, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Suriname, Syria, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uganda, Uruguay, Venezuela and Palestine.
Is it allowed to vape on airplanes?
Unfortunately not. Vaping (or smoking) is not permitted on any US aircraft and you are also responsible for ensuring that your vape pen does not “fire up” (press the button, heat up) during the flight.
Attempting to vape during a flight can result in heavy fines, criminal charges, or ban from future flights on that airline.
Can I vape at an airport?
Many airports have designated smoking areas, but it is important to note that vaping is not permitted in all areas.
Always check airport rules or ask staff for advice. In some cases, vaping indoors can result in fines or other penalties.
Which vape alternative on a long-haul flight?
It is better to find a suitable nicotine alternative for the flight.
There are nicotine gums, lozenges and patches. Most of these products are legal to use on airplanes and at airports.
While they aren't as fun as vaping, they won't get you in trouble with airport security.

Traveling with vape pens is legal in the United States as long as you follow the rules and regulations in place. Always pack your electronic cigarettes in your carry-on luggage.
You can take your liquid in your carry-on or checked baggage, but be aware that liquid may leak from the e-liquid bottles, so you must pack them accordingly.
Keeping these considerations in mind will ensure you're well prepared for your next adventure with your beloved vape cartridges. No more unexpected surprises at the airport – just a smooth, relaxing and safe journey.
There are exceptions, however, so always check with your airline before traveling. And remember to check the laws regarding e-cigarettes at your destination. In some countries, they are illegal.
