Can large doses of cannabis cause hallucinations like mushrooms and LSD?
We know that cannabis is considered “psychedelic” – even if most people would never have a fully psychedelic experience with the plant.
But in sufficiently high doses, it can certainly put you in a psychedelic state that can overwhelm the senses. This is especially true when we’re talking about 11-hydroxy-THC – or what happens to weed when you eat it.
Well – a recent study suggests that given the right conditions, cannabis can induce a psychedelic oceanic experience, albeit not as frequently or consistently as other classic psychedelics.
In today’s article, we’re going to look at the differences between cannabis and classic psychedelics, particularly in relation to the “oceanic experience” mentioned by the researchers and how it can be used in a therapeutic and personal developmental setting.
What is the “sea experience”?
If you’ve never tried a classic psychedelic like LSD or psilocybin, you may not be familiar with the “oceanic experience”.
In essence, an “oceanic experience” is what happens when the self lets go of its rigid boundaries and bleeds into a “more universal experience”. In other words, there is a limitless sense of self and a deep connection with everything around you.
I once called this the “Great Big Blob” when I discovered some magic mushrooms in the mountains of Oaxaca.
In essence, I could see the interconnectedness of all things – the soup of existence and how, while we perceive ourselves to be different from our environment, we are really just clumped molecules and compounds floating around in a cosmic soup.
Think of it like ink being thrown into the water and how it begins to form different patterns that appear individual – but when you see the container, you know that there is no way the ink can “recover” from the water to separate”.
It now belongs to the same substance, it is the same substance – no longer water, no longer ink, but the combination of both, expressed through movement and density.
This is essentially what researchers call “an oceanic experience”. It is something that no matter how hard I try to explain it, it is not understood until it is experienced.
As researchers found that cannabis also creates “marine experiences”
Now let’s take a closer look at the study in question, and more importantly, how researchers concluded that cannabis also has the ability to create an “oceanic experience”.
“When the psilocybin labs began to emphasize that ocean boundlessness seemed to be the mechanism underlying the antidepressant effects of the molecule, almost every cannabis fan couldn’t help but ask, ‘Hey! Doesn’t marijuana have comparable effects? ‘”Said study author Mitch Earleywine, professor of psychology at the University of Albany.
“My students had already shown that ‘challenging experiences’ were common when people ate more edibles than they wanted. Asking people if they think cannabis also creates these oceanic boundlessness effects seemed like an obvious next step. “
The team conducted essentially the same survey it would on someone who ingests magic mushrooms and found that a significant proportion of users had a “breakthrough experience” with cannabis at some point.
Why is that important?
Research is trying to find out what exactly it is in a psychedelic experience that appears to provide the ability to resolve depression.
One of the things they investigated is the introduction of the Oceanic Boundlessness Experience, which allows the user to let go of the rigid sense of self and assume a different configuration of consciousness.
In other words, this experience allows the user to see their problems from a different perspective, which in turn enables them to process the information.
There is a theory that most of our psychological problems are caused by a phenomenon called “neuro-lock,” and when you use psychedelics you start to act from different perspectives.
This immediately breaks the neurological barrier – the configuration that cannot solve the problem – and allows the user to be more resourceful about the situation.
Furthermore, a sense of “oneness” means that there must be a sense of “love” within the equation. This means that if someone has harmed you in the past and you can somehow reconnect with that person through some artificially induced experience – you can find the space to heal, to let go of the pain, and to a better version of yourself to grow up.
Why cannabis is NOT like classic psychedelics
One thing the study found is that while cannabis has the “potential” to induce these oceanic limitless experiences, it does not consistently do so.
Not like LSD or psilocybin, which – when you consume them – are undoubtedly sending you into this room. With cannabis, it’s like playing Russian roulette.
Researchers are now investigating how they can achieve this effect by using other psychedelic techniques such as music, eye masks, and even breathing exercises.
By using cannabis to induce these experiences – we could offer a new way of dealing with problems like depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders
The sticky end result
While cannabis does not behave like a classic psychedelic, there are “some” overlapping elements that could lead us to new lines of therapy for a wide variety of mood disorders. Greening-out is a common term that refers to a very large dose of cannabis.
Scientists are now discovering just some of these benefits and are trying to fill the void left by the total ban.
For over 50 years, research into psychedelia and altered states of consciousness has been held hostage by the DEA and FDA, but now, with organizations like MAPS and with the increasing acceptance of these substances in society, we’re starting the shift.
Could this be the beginning of a new age in medicine where these transpersonal states of consciousness become an integral part of our overall mental and physical health?
Maybe – but one thing is for sure, you will be hearing a lot more about this type of study over the next 10 years.
And it’s time you asked me!
