Lemon Cherry Gelato. Grown by Fig Farms, CA. Hybrid indica. (David Downs/Leafly)
Marylanders love flowers, pre-rolls, carts, edibles, dab and more. They have quite a discerning market and tastes, with a top weed city in the US – Baltimore – and a mature medicinal industry. Top flavors include Lemon Cherry Gelato, Sour Diesel, and Apple Fritter. Here are some top strains and more information about them.
Lemon Cherry Gelato
Lemon Cherry Gelato (Sherbet x GSC) has evidently enchanted people in Charm City and the rest of Maryland. Maryland cannabis lovers prefer flowers above all else and have a refined palate for LCG’s citrus and fruit terp profile, full of caryophyllene and limonene.
guava
Guava is the fruitier and more stoned twin of Gelato – a strain of the decade’s most popular and productive strain. Marylanders no doubt love gelato, but they also keep it spicy and tropical. In the height of summer, the uplifting effects and fruity salad flavor of guava will help you make the most of those long, sunny days.
Runtz
Runtz has traveled widely since his Bay Area origins and has found many, many fans in the Old Line State. Runtz advances the Zaza line with the creamy gas of Gelato and the sour euphoria of Zkittlez. The long list of award winners – not to mention our 2020 Strain of the Year – speaks to her versatile flavor profile and consistently mood-boosting effects.

Sour diesel
As the saying goes, “Make new friends, but keep the old ones.” Sour Diesel (Chhemdog x Super Skunk) is an East Coast classic; an OG that is not an OG. For over 30 years, people around the world have raved about its gasoline fumes and intensely intoxicating effects, and 2023 is no exception. Sour Diesel is Maryland’s most popular sativa, followed by Jack Herer.

apple bits
The data shows that Maryland likes these apples. Apple Fritter (Sour Apple x Animal Cookies) by Lumpy’s Flowers is the frontrunner in the Bakery and Orchard range; Consumers get the tart, doughy base of the Cookies family with a tart note of diesel and even a little cheese flavor on top. Apple Fritter works both day and night.
Snoop Dogg AND
Marylanders spend their money like they’re hot for Snoop Dogg OG, an earthy strain with pine notes that cleanses the palate after so many sweet strains. Lemon OG and Sour Diesel give this strain her complex aromas and effects that make you want Martha Stewart.
All “cakes”
Don’t like numbers – smokers in Maryland have a great fondness for sweet tooths. Most of the strains on this list belong to the dessert category and can trace their lineage back to gelato. Both Wedding Cake (Triangle Kush x Animal Mints) and Ice Cream Cake (Wedding Cake x Gelato #33) are Maryland staples thanks to their blend of sweet and savory flavors and effects that are perfect for a day hike, kickback, or movie night. very popular.
The Maryland Terps
Pot’s aroma molecules—terpenes—drive the cannabis experience, so go beyond the THC levels. Maryland has many really popular dessert strains, less classic sativas, and some terpene profiles that are considered rare in the US.
Zaza Rules
“Zaza” is cannabis slang derived from the word “exotic” used for popular cannabis. Used in a sentence: Maryland has a lot of zaza for starting legalization. Strains high in beta-caryophyllene, myrcene and limonene dominate the shelves. This triforce really defines Zaza in 2023—you see it all over dessert strains like Runtz and Wedding Cake.
Classic sativas
A counterpoint and a distant second to Zaza-Terps? Classic sativas – as demonstrated by terpinolene strains, often combined with myrcene. These are your Jack Herers, Hazes, Durbans and the like. Reviewers report more energetic and lighter effects in this class.
Real rarities
Not to be confused with exotics – which are the most common – the truly rare terps profiles include Maryland’s ocimene strains, as well as humulene and pinene-dominant species. We’re seeing the same collapse on the west coast because the Maryland market is very sophisticated and trends are moving at the speed of light.
