Bill Gates confesses to Seth Rogen that he smoked weed in high school ‘to be cool’
Microsoft founder Bill Gates shared with actor and celebrated stoner Seth Rogen that he too has a history of cannabis (although we can assume Gates’ tolerance is much lower than Rogen’s). Rogen appeared on an episode of Gates’ new podcast, Unconfuse Me, which launched last week. Rogen and his wife Lauren Miller spoke to the billionaire philanthropist about all things cannabis, including research barriers, the potency of cannabis and Gates’ attempts to be a popular kid.
Although the tech pioneer is worth $117.6 billion, it’s safe to say that embracing his true nerd form has been a boon to him.
Gates said he said Yass to Puff Puff Pass in high school and admitted that he smoked weed “to be cool.”
“It wasn’t so much about smoking weed for the sake of the weed as it was about being part of the crowd,” Gates said. Gates elaborated further, sharing that while his high school indulgence should fit in, he’s completely comfortable with the changes in cannabis policy. “It’s amazing how that’s changed. You know, growing up, it was just kind of a rebellion.”
He added that the ongoing split between state and federal law “needs to be resolved.”
“When it first appeared in Colorado [and] Washington state — you know, my state was one of the first to have that — I was like, ‘Wow, things are really changing,'” said Gates, who was born in Seattle. “And the fact that there can still be a consistent set of rules at the federal level and at the state level is definitely a paradox that has to be resolved at some point.”
The conversation shifted to edibles, which, while loved by so many in the cannabis community, are too potent for Gates’ liking. Like so many older men before him, the multi-billionaire shared a concern that weed had gotten much stronger since he was in high school. “A lot of us who smoked when it was illegal actually had pretty modest doses,” Gates said. “At least when you get into the legal cannabis world, you can take really extreme doses, especially with the edibles.” ,” he said. “I mean, I think I know what that means, ‘Okay, if I blow five times’, whereas if you take it I have no idea.”
Hey Gates. Some of us don’t have tons of billions of dollars and need 100mg of THC in a nice gummy candy, so don’t be hateful.
Of course, everyone’s tolerance is different and foods should be labeled accordingly. So whether you want something low-dose or the “I’ve been a medical patient for ten years” dose, you know what you’re getting. Even Rogen, who owns cannabis lifestyle company Houseplant, agreed that edibles can be a (literal) journey. Rogen also said he would welcome federal regulations in this area to safely standardize product strength. According to Rogen, even cannabis legends like Snoop Dogg “don’t eat edibles.”
“That’s how wild the variety of edibles is,” Rogen said. “You really don’t know what you’re going to get.” Earlier this year, on his GGN show with Snoop Dogg, Snoop told Rogen, “I don’t like edibles because they don’t have an on/off button.” However, if you have someone If you’re the one who could eat a bowl of edibles for breakfast, you don’t need to feel weird. Snoop Dogg is rumored to be hitting up to 150 a day with his professional joint roller, and the legendary rapper actually has his own line of edibles, including cannabis-infused onion rings.
Finally, while Gates advocated cannabis deregulation, he also raised concerns about the carcinogenic effects of “smoking enough weed.” Rogen stuck to his preferred method of dosing, saying that there was no scientific consensus on this and that he and his wife’s doctors had not told them to quit smoking.
