Bid on Colorado’s grass-themed license plates for a good cause
Last year’s bids brought in $45,410 for Coloradans with disabilities
For the second straight year, Colorado is accepting bids for 22 limited-edition license plates with cannabis-friendly tags like “BLUNT,” “420,” and “MRY JANE.” Last year’s opening auction raised $45,410 thanks to records like “BONG” and “GREEN” each fetching over $3,500.
This year’s call for entries has been online since April 1st and will remain open until Wednesday April 20th at 4:20 p.m. The Colorado Disability Funding Committee will use the proceeds from this year’s auction to support innovative new programs that improve the quality of life and independence of people with disabilities. Family Voices CO received a grant following the 2021 auction that was used to launch a pilot program for 12 children with deaf-blindness.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to provide grant support to charitable and for-profit organizations that serve people with disabilities. I am very pleased to continue to support the efforts of the Colorado Disability Funding Committee.”
Colorado Lt. gov. Dianne Primavera
The highest bid in 2021 was “ISIT420” which went for $6,630. “TEGRIDY,” an ode to a fictional cannabis company in the Colorado-based comedy South Park, generated the biggest buzz at $4,930 after 151 bids.
Last year, The Mile High State set a U.S. record for legal cannabis sales, grossing $2.22 billion in fiscal 2021. Since legalization in 2012, the state has earned over $2 billion in taxes and fees from $12 billion in sales, with $538.7 million going to Colorado public schools as of March 2022, according to the Marijuana Policy Project .

As pointed out by independent Colorado distributor Westword, these signs will likely look better on your wall than they do on your vehicle. Colorado on Monday launched a program that will help law enforcement identify drivers impaired by weeds. And we already know that some law enforcement agencies have a habit of abusing gray areas around the green in rule of law states.
While the smell of cannabis alone is no longer a solid probable reason for a search in Colorado or several other states, you might want to slow your pace before taking to the streets with a “WEED” sign. The announcement of the stoner record auction also included a stern warning that mixing driving with cannabis is never a good idea and stressed the consequences of DUI, which include a $13,500 fine.

“Colorado has been a leader in the cannabis space for over a decade, bringing bold, innovative and creative companies to the state,” Gov. Jared Polis (D) said in a press release about the auction. “These efforts allow us to celebrate Colorado’s mile-high reputation and fund important projects and programs in our disability community.”
The highest bidder on each Colorado weed tile will receive exclusive rights to a novel design using their choice of letters/numbers. Winners can save the rights to their number plates for a later date, but they will have to pay registration fees and other costs if they want them on the road. The buyer also has the right to resell their record rights through the Colorado Disability Funding Committee.
Don’t be surprised if you see a bid from the Leafly News team before the auction closes on April 20th. We have our eye on the 420 tag, and the rules state that the winner of that tag has the option to reserve 420 (oh, from zero instead) for half the price of the winning bid on 420. Normally we wouldn’t show our hand, but we welcome a challenge from any high rollers who don’t mind betting on green for a good cause.
