Study Links Psychedelic Use to Good Health Habits

Psychedelics use is more widespread than ever and many are thankful for it.

Not only are psychedelic drugs a safer recreational choice than alcohol, but they also have the power to transform one’s life for the better. Countless people have been able to turn a new leaf after living lives that locked them down due to difficult-to-treat mental illness. These range from alcoholism and addiction to post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, anxiety and more.

For people who don’t necessarily struggle with mental health issues, psychedelics can still be beneficial. It has been shown to improve overall quality of life and can enhance perceptions of life as a whole. Now, there are studies showing that psychedelics use can actually be linked to a healthier lifestyle – both physical and mental.

Psychedelics Linked to Healthier Habits

A recent survey of American adults found that those who admitted to having used at least one of the classic psychedelics also ate healthier foods and smoked fewer cigarettes.

Classic psychedelics refer to hallucinogenic drugs that cause trips or an extraordinary state of mind. Some popular examples of classic psychedelics include magic mushrooms, LSD, ayahuasca, DMT, LSD, and peyote. Most of these drugs are illegal, although there are some places in the world that have either decriminalized or legalized them.

For the study, Otto Simonsson and other colleagues evaluated data from an online survey of 2822 participants. The group was selected using a methodology that allowed the population to reflect the rest of US adults in terms of age, gender, and ethnicity. Of the group, 613 admitted to having used psychedelics at least once. They were then asked if they had used cocaine, cannabis, painkillers, MDMA, PCP, tobacco or inhalants at least once, how many cigarettes they had smoked and how old they were when they first started drinking alcohol.

In addition, participants were asked if they used any of the classic psychedelics. Surprisingly, those who answered yes to the question of whether they use psychedelics and subsequently responded to psychological experiences with psychedelics found that those who used them had healthier lifestyle choices than those who did not.

“Lifelong use of classical psychedelics, for example, was more common among men, those with greater self-reported risky behaviors, and those who reported lifetime use of other illicit substances. Lifelong use of classical psychedelics was very slightly associated with healthier tobacco- and diet-related behaviors, but no association with alcohol- and exercise-related behaviors was observed,” the researchers wrote. In short, those who used psychedelics at least once smoked less tobacco and consumed healthier foods.

“While these results cannot be substantiated, they do suggest that psychological insights during a classic psychedelic experience can lead to positive health behavior change and better physical health in some areas, most notably related to weight management,” the authors of the study conclude Study.

Psychedelics Linked to Better Mental Health

Another recent study of 985 survey participants found that mystical experiences may be associated with long-lasting reductions in depression and anxiety. They were asked to describe the psychedelics they used and then filled out questionnaires that rated the mystical nature of it. In addition, they were asked to describe whether it was psychologically enlightening, challenging, or resulted in a positive mood.

The researchers performed a machine learning analysis of data from participants who were asked about their non-clinical experiences with psychedelics. Those who performed best on tests asking about the mystical nature of their psychedelics use also showed improvements in symptoms of depression and anxiety.

“Sometimes the challenge comes because it’s an extremely mystical and enlightening experience that can be challenging in and of itself,” says Alan Davis, the study’s lead author. “In clinical research, people do everything they can to create a safe and supportive environment. But when challenges arise, it’s important to better understand that challenging experiences can actually be linked to positive outcomes,” he explains.

“The group with the highest insightful and mystical experiences and the least challenging experiences showed the greatest benefit in terms of anxiety and depression symptom relief and other longer-lasting benefits in their lives,” explains Aki Nikolaidis, the study’s first author.

Notably, they also found that the participants who reported using LSD and psilocybin were the same ones who reported better mental health outcomes, even after facing a difficult situation.

“Identifying subtypes that exist regardless of what psychedelic you’re taking answers an interesting question,” adds Nikolaidis. “But the fact that we found that they are associated with specific outcomes and replicated that finding really shows why it’s important to understand the powerful nature of what is subjectively happening and its potential to be a positive outcome.” achieve,” he says.

These are just a few of many other studies showing that psychedelics can actually improve mental and physical health for everyone. While we don’t yet know how or why they work this way, there are a few theories as to why. For one thing, consuming psychedelics helps us see things outside of our actual lives, in a way that allows us to better connect with ourselves and our environment.

Another possible reason is the fact that psychedelics use encourages altruism, empathy, and compassion—not just toward loved ones and the world, but toward ourselves. Psychedelics’ ability to create new connections in the brain can also lead to lasting ones make positive changes in our lives.
