America’s Best Jack Herer for Jack Herer Day and beyond

Sunday, June 18th is Jack Herer Day, an unofficial commemoration of the profane, bombastic, loveable weed warrior and author of the seminal 1985 polemic on hemp legalization, “The Emperor Wears No Clothes.”

Herer died in 2010 at the age of 70, just two years before voters in Colorado and Washington passed legalization of weed. Today, 23 states and Washington, DC have legalized THC, and the federal government has legalized hemp nationwide, sparking an explosion of CBD oil products and a golden age of cannabis seeds. Jack would have loved it and still found rights to fight for.

The strain, named in honor of Jack Herer, is no lightweight either. Jack Herer was produced by Sensi Seeds in Amsterdam in the 90’s and is one of the top 15 most-on-the-menu strains in the US on Leafly this June. Jack is no longer the most searched strain, but it still simmers in the top 30. Jack is more akin to the Eagles and other classic rock greats – the shimmering green buds are still a staple of US weed culture.

We shopped, smoked and searched the US for the best Jack Herer breeders in the country. We’ve also expanded the lens to include several strains that resemble Jack Herer in their dominant odorant molecule – terpinolene.

This sample evokes nostalgia for the days when we were lucky enough to snag a good bag of Jack, with over-the-top bubblegum and nose-tickling tropical fruit notes. A classic hazy nose, excellent structure, and soaring high make it clear why the crew at Midnight Fruit Co. have been running this cut for over a decade.

Keith explained how to keep this time-honoured strain in the garden. “Whether it’s older generations who remember a certain time they had Jack 20 years ago, or a younger person who experienced it for the first time, it’s one of those classic strains that people always come back for more.” (Ryan Herron)

Few growers are as popular with jack terps in California as Esensia Gardens, sold by Solful in San Francisco and Sebastopol. Buddha’s Hand and Lime Juice descend from the old-fashioned Chernobyl strain, which is high in terpinolene. Lime Juice is one of the top ten outdoor strains in the state in the 2023 Emerald Cup. Bored of Gelatos? Esensia Gardens and Solful will cleanse your taste buds. The world-class outdoor space comes from a diverse, heritage-rich team in the hills of Mendocino County. Jack Herer would be proud to wake up and bake with these buds.

Nevada

Rythm’s Jack strain doesn’t do any nonsense. A strong citrus flavor on both the inside and outside makes for an incredibly smooth smoke that hits hard. With 25% THC and 4.9 mg/g caryophyllene, it is stronger than the average Jack, resulting in a consistently uplifting, euphoric, and energizing high. Trichome-laden and pungent, Rythm’s strain produces one of Nevada’s prettiest and stickiest buds. But beware; Even a little too much of this Jack can give users a heavy feeling behind the eyes. It is available at 45 Las Vegas pharmacies including Reef, Las Vegas ReLeaf, Essence, Jardín, The Source, Nevada Wellness Center, Beyond Hello, Exhale NV, Curaleaf, Zen Leaf, Jade and Sahara Wellness.
