Over the years, vitamins and supplements have proven ineffective. Still, that hasn’t stopped hundreds of catchy companies from capitalizing on this market. A new study shows that Americans don’t care or know any better as they spend billions of dollars on these items.
A new report shows that more than half of Americans take dietary supplements, contributing to an industry worth $50 billion a year.

The US Preventative Services Task Force released a report on the JAMA Network that analyzed 84 different studies on dietary supplements and concluded that there is no evidence to support the claim that dietary supplements can prevent cardiovascular disease or cancer. They also published an article that deepened these scientific findings.
“Unfortunately, based on the existing evidence, the task force cannot recommend for or against the use of most vitamins and minerals and calls for more research,” USPSTF interim officer John Wong said.
The results make it clear that dietary supplements have virtually no effect for people without pregnancy and malnutrition.
The article that accompanied the findings argues that the problem with these supplements is that they give people a false sense of security by taking their money while claiming to protect them from disease, despite the science making it clear has that these effects are not real. These products give people a way out for healthy eating and suggest that a pill can provide the same benefits as eating fruits and vegetables and exercising regularly.
“The USPSTF concluded that the current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of using multivitamin supplements, single supplements, or most pair supplements for the prevention of cardiovascular disease or cancer (I Statement)” , write the authors of the study .
