After 2022 with cannabis and crypto
It cannot be denied that we are entering a “new era”. I’m still not sure if it’s going to be utopian or dystopian, but it has become painfully obvious that what has faded in the history books and what is to come is knocking on the front door.
I’m not talking about the end times or anything like that. Rather, I believe that what we see before our eyes – the madness of existence as we know it – is a clash of ideas. It is old paradigms that collide with new ones, it is with the passing of generations and the pages of our history books that record a very specific division into timelines.
What we’re experiencing is just as important as the renaissance, the industrial revolution, and so on. We have reached a point in modern human history where we are more connected than ever. We can apparently buy anything at the push of a button and we are facing a new technological leap.
What comes next will be everyone’s guess. However, I’m sure there are some tech billionaires out there planning their perfect futures – just as people thought the internet would never find one, this next leap in innovation will change us forever.
One of the core conflicts of ideas currently emerging in the world is that of currency, especially that of Crypto vs. FIAT.
Interestingly, this debate coincides with the revival of the cannabis industry. Due to the current “state and international illegality of cannabis”, banks do not allow business with cannabis companies. Of course, this has changed over the years, but until it is federally legal – banks will continue to be reluctant for “fear of prosecution”. At least this is the reason we are given.
Banks are highly regulated, expensive, slow, and geared towards the wealthy. This is in part why Bitcoin was invented in the first place. To oust the banking system and decentralize the currency. While crypto hasn’t quite found its place just yet, perhaps the cannabis industry could be the catalyst ushering in the age of crypto banking.
How Would a Canna Crypto World Work?
While I am certainly NOT a crypto expert – nowhere near – I can interpret human behavior much better. I am fantastic at analyzing systems and understanding seemingly abstract things. Using my limited understanding of the optimal cryptosystems available today, I believe that there would have to be a few elements to make it a success.
These things would be;
-
A designated cryptocurrency – This could be an established coin like Ethereum or Bitcoin, but it could also be an industry-specific coin that would be adopted by the entire supply chain. The value of this currency would likely be weighed against the US dollar for comparison purposes, however, over time, market norms could possibly form that completely exclude the FIAT reference.
-
A central app or a marketplace – Cryptocurrency aside, you will likely need some sort of point-of-sale system and marketplace. This may already exist, in which case mass adoption would be required. You need a “standardized system” and the more decentralized, the better.
-
Consumers willing to buy – This may not be too difficult to do if the previous two systems are firmly entrenched and trusted by the majority. If it “works” and makes life easier for the customer, gives him more anonymity when shopping – the adoption should take place relatively quickly. Perhaps as easy as the “right app” when all legal bureaucracy is eliminated.
Of course, I’m sure there are a million other things that I am not even aware of. However, this would be the bare minimum in my opinion to have a cannabis marketplace for both consumers and retailers. You probably have another marketplace for industrial shopping – but all of this will, of course, come from market power.
Beyond the exchange of money
Blockchain goes beyond currencies – we’re just scratching the surface of the technology. However, some of the more obvious uses include encryption, data storage, licensing, tracking, and things that we haven’t invented yet.
Blockchain is sure to become the standard around the world in the years to come. Combine this with the rise of robotics and interstellar travel – we certainly see a brave new world ahead of us. How AI and precision farming will affect the cannabis industry is sure to be an interesting development.
Is it all a pipe dream?
Nobody can say for sure how things will play out in the long run. The past two years have shown us how fragile social systems are and how easily we give up our common sense when exposed to danger.
However, in these crazy times, great changes are born, and if the old systems give up under the pressures of progress, we may see a new world where all of our money exchanges are done with this technology.
Personally, I advocate a more decentralized world in terms of power dynamics. If blockchain can help us relieve the pressure of the boot on our necks, protect individual rights from large corporations – it’s my game!
