According to Gallop, what will a modern cannabis user look like in 2021?

Previously, if the question had been asked, “What does a cannabis user look like,” people would have immediately thought of Tommy Chong or some archetypal stoner that is archived in their internal cultural landscape.

Nowadays the question is a little more difficult to answer. After all, Elon Musk is “technically” a cannabis user and no one could have imagined himself studying Joe Rogan’s podcast.

According to a recent Gallup poll, 49% of American adults have tried cannabis – in other words, whether you know it or not – you know a cannabis user.

Nowadays anyone can be a cannabis user – and that’s a good thing! The stigma associated with cannabis use is finally disappearing, probably because the “drug warrior generation” – for lack of a better word – is dying out.

With the takeover by the next generations, there is a significant shift in drug use – at least when it comes to cannabis.

What did Gallop find?

About 50 years ago, only 4% of Americans said they had tried cannabis. By the 1970s, about 20% of Americans had smoked marijuana. In the 1980s it rose to 30% and by 2015 to 40%.

It must be made clear that “tried” does not mean “used up”. It simply means that at some point in their life – probably more recently – they have tried cannabis.

Of those who say they currently “smoke” cannabis, the survey found that only 12% are active users. This has been a constant factor over the past few years.

Gallop found “generation pattern”

The oldest Americans living today, those born before 1945, whom Gallup calls “traditionalists”, have tried marijuana much less often than those in other cohorts, with only 19% saying they did. By comparison, around half of millennials (51%), Generation X (49%) and baby boomers (50%). – SOURCE GALLOP

Gallop also found that Baby Boomer and Gen Xer have been consistent with their cannabis use since the 1980s. This makes sense because cannabis is actively embedded in the counterculture of these generations.

However, it is the younger generations who are growing up now – in a world with packaged cannabis products in all different shapes and flavors. It is now you who are starting to influence the polls significantly.

For example, around 20% of millennials smoke marijuana, while only 11% of Gen X and 9% of baby boomers do.

Here are some other interesting stats from the survey:

  • Sixteen percent of men versus 9% of women smoke marijuana.

  • Only 3% of Americans who attend church services weekly and 6% who attend monthly say they smoke marijuana. In contrast, 19% who rarely or never attend a church service attend this service.

  • 22% of political liberals and 15% of Democrats use marijuana regularly, compared to 6% of Conservatives and 7% of Republicans.

  • The rate of marijuana use is 5% among those with postgraduate education compared with 14% among those with four years of college or less.

According to Gallop, cannabis use is likely to increase by around 50%, meaning 1 in 2 people have tried cannabis.

That means virtually anyone you know could be a cannabis smoker.

It seems America has made up its mind and it wants weed!

Congratulations!

If you’re reading this, you will have made it to the tipping point. We have come to a point where cannabis is so widespread that 1 in 2 people have tried it.

America is ready for the full national cannabis, and it seems the government is preparing to adjust to the “new normal.” Obviously, with full intent to get as much money out of the equation as possible.

However, from reading the signs it is painfully obvious that while the incumbent government is sticking to its “no to cannabis” policy, there is simply too much support from all quarters to tap into at some point.

At this point in time, there is more money to be made from legal cannabis than from bans, and if you live in a financially strong nation – money always wins!

Which brings us to the average cannabis user – the current 12% of regulars. Who are you? These are the core groups of people who maintain cannabis culture. That’s roughly 1 in 10.

These people can be anyone. A friend, brother or sister, mother or father. From every profession, from every area of life.

This is the point of this article, to show you that while there are some people who use cannabis, there is no defining characteristic. People of all stripes use cannabis and trying to typify consumers means ignoring the plant’s multicultural appeal.

The sticky end result

We are entering a new paradigm where these mind altering substances, once touted as the greatest evil, take center stage, ready to show the world what they are made of.

As a psychonaut, I have experimented with many of the drugs they are currently testing in laboratories around the world, and I believe we will see some kind of neo-renaissance when these drugs become commercially available.

I don’t think there will be mass adoption of these drugs as we can see in the Gallop poll. About one in ten is some kind of psychonaut – but that’s more than enough to influence the cultural zeitgeist.

Just look at the “cannabis effect” – no matter how the government tried to frame the plant – people still chose weed.

There is something about the psychoactive effects of cannabis that continues to call people – like an invitation to communicate with the world on a different frequency.

When psychedelics reach the same level of acceptance as cannabis – that is, 12% of the population regularly use it – we will see a change in all areas of society, from the arts to the hard sciences.

This gallop poll was the sign you were looking for – the cannabis tipping point has been reached!
