A bunch of weed trucks in New York got towed, but not for the illegal sale of weed

New York doesn’t officially sell legal marijuana, although the city is packed with cannabis businesses ranging from trucks to pop-up stores.

This week, the New York Sheriff’s Office impounded about a dozen trucks from Weed World Candies, which we previously reported does not sell anything containing THC, “although customers have reported being told otherwise, and in at least one.” Fall , a company spokesman said their products contain CBD.”

According to NBC New York, the trucks had an outstanding parking debt of $504,000, with a $316,000 ticket debt. Some of the trucks were towed because of parking debts, while others were parked illegally.

“This has absolutely nothing to do with marijuana, it just has to do with unpaid debt. Judgment debt that is unpaid and owed to the City of New York,” said NYC Deputy Sheriff Maureen Kokeas. “The Treasury Department has communicated with these parties many, many, many times over many years to collect this debt and the debt has been ignored – so we went out and took enforcement action.”

The unregulated cannabis market in New York has fueled many conversations. Although cannabis is legal, the city has yet to establish a viable cannabis market, which confuses many. Earlier this month, NYC Mayor Eric Adams made his stance clear, urging people to have fun, light up and spend.

“Have fun, light up, but most importantly, spend some money,” he said at the Cannabis World Congress and Business Expo at the Javits Center in Manhattan. Speaking about unlicensed cannabis businesses, Adams said that rather than handing out fines, he believes in warning them and helping them transition to a legitimate business.

Cannabis dispensaries in New York don’t have an official launch date yet, but experts predict stores will be up and running by the end of this year or early 2023.
