Cannabis workers go on strike in Ann Arbor, push for the union – and send industry waves
In the Ann Arbor Exclusive Brands pharmacy, five employees started a strike on Friday when they campaigned for trade union for trade union under the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW).
Strikers and budgeting Emily Hull clearly exhibited: “This industry is about taking care of people and taking care of people and lifting each other,” she said. “This company actively makes the opposite of its own workers.”
The strike has gained dynamics: UFCW members and community allies have joined the line of strike and swelled the presence outside the pharmacy on almost 20 people. Despite the tension, the interactions with the police remained peaceful – although the officials were called for placement a few times.
Why this is important nationwide
The union drives in cannabis have slowed themselves down this year with regard to the financial pressure of the industry, including contractions and tightened margins. But employment experts say Michigan could arise this trend. If the market matures and faces consolidation, the workers have dwindling protection – and many are looking for the stability of a union contract.
So far, UFCW has represented almost 300 pharmacies and 36 breeders in the United States, and the Ann Arbor strike could be a Bellwether for renewed work activism in cannabis.
Wider effects and risks
If it is successful, the strike could pave the way for stronger labor rights in the entire cannabis sector – wages, security protocols and job security in a notoriously moody industry. However, union formation also raises questions from the industry: is the price of labor costs increased or more companies push underground? Will this accelerate consolidation and prefer large chains compared to basic operators?
