Unexpected cannabis aid for the military
The military and marijuana had a long story – now members of the GOP are trying to help the services in a change
Marijuana was part of the armed forces from Vietnam to PTBs. Traditionalists have waged war against the green plant, but now there are unexpected cannabis help for the military. If the number of recruitment continues to shrink, a wave of republican legislators is committed to brave reforms to modernize military attitude – with cannabis policy. Your goal? Make the armed forces more accessible to young Americans who have legally used marijuana in their daily life.

At the center of this push is rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), Which introduced a change in the National Defense Authorization Act from 2025 (NDAA), which would ban marijuana tests for commissioning or commissioning civil servants. Gaetz argues that former cannabis consumption should not rule out the service of their country, especially in a recruitment and retention crisis. Almost 33% more recruits that were tested positively for marijuana in 2022 than 2020.

This is not the only effort from Gaetz: other GOP legislators press parallel reforms. MP Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) proposed to enable service members to use CBD products in the federal administration, while the Congress Cannabis Caucus-proposed by R and D membership changes to enable VA doctors to advise medical cannabis treatment for veterans in legal states.
In the meantime, the House Armed Services Committee, headed by Republicans, presented a change application from Rep. Nancy Mace (Rs.c.) written by Rep. Nancy Mace (Rs.c.) and Rep. Morgan Luttrell (R-Texas). This program would enable the Ministry of Defense to examine the health effects of cannabis on veterans with PTSD, depression and pain – psychedelica research in general such as MDMA and PSILocybin studies.
Why now? With medical marijuana legally in 38 states and leisure use in 24 years, many potential recruits are filtered out by outdated drug policy – depending on the evidence that corresponds to the exemptions with other soldiers.
The feeling is open to Reddit:
“This proposed change would remove marijuana tests at the time of hiring/commissioning. It seems to be a reasonable change to support recruitment.”

For millennials who grew up in a patchwork of legalization, these reforms feel sensible, overdue and integrative – a re -calibration of military politics in order to reflect modern social norms.
Nevertheless, it is worth mentioning: none of these suggestions are still the law. While some reforms in the committee have occurred, they not all made it to the house floor, let alone both chambers came by.
In summary, it can be said that a growing cohort of GOP legislators does not disqualify the prior use of cannabis, disqualifies military service, turns the script to revolve it into recruitment rules and concerns a more integrative future.
