According to a 2024 study by Hinge, 67% of the gene z -users stated at least one situation hip last year. Millennials are not far back. Many say that it offers freedom and flexibility, especially in a dating culture, which is characterized by awareness of mental health, financial uncertainty and a post-pandemical change in priorities.
But this freedom comes with costs.
“Situations can feel safe because there is no pressure, but they also leave people emotionally confused,” says Dr. Maya Collins, a relationship therapist based in Los Angeles. “You invest time and emotions without knowing where to go.”
For gen z, which often appreciate emotional nuances and contradicts traditional binary files, the situation hip can match broader social values - autonomy, research and authenticity. In the meantime, older millennials, many of which navigate or recover from the divorce, are often torn between the attractiveness of intimacy with low pressure and the need for clarity.

Social media has only reinforced the trend. Platforms such as TikK and Instagram are flooded with memes, breakup stories and “therapy interview” about binding styles, emotional non -availability and bread crumble – all of which refuel both the popularity and the pitfalls of situations.
So is this a generation fear of commitment – or do we only rewrite the rules of love?
Maybe both.
If the romantic norms develop, one thing is clear: communication is the key. Regardless of whether you are casually immerse yourself with someone or look for a long-term partner, it is the healthiest step to define the relationship with-even if only at the moment.
