“I thought, 'I'm making a fruit salad here,'” Blockhead tells Leafly. “I’m going to make a fruit salad out of this thing.”
Michigan cloner Mobilejay popularized the hybrid after selecting a type of blockberry and jokingly naming it “Super Boof.” The strain has a large, sparkly, green, purple appearance and a loud orange cookie smell.
When smoked, the taste pampers the palate, as the versatile effect lies exactly in the middle between calming and stimulating. Reviewers report feeling giggly, euphoric and relaxed. They said it can especially help with anxiety, depression and stress. As of 2021, nearly 6,000 Leafly reviewers have added it to their favorites. The average rating is 4.6 out of 5.
Even though Super Boof has a strong effect with more than 25% THC, it is still suitable for beginners and its biggest drawback is its cottony mouth.

“A terrible little accident”
Super Boof has an extremely humble origin compared to previous Leafly Strain of the Year winners such as Permanent Marker, Jealousy and Wedding Cake from industry leader Seed Junky Genetics. Super Boof's authentic, organic march to the top is grower tested and smoker approved. There has never been a meteoric marketing blitz like Runtz.
In 2019, the craft beer enthusiast Blockhead crossed the strain from just one pack each of Black Cherry Punch from Inhouse Genetics and “Mountain” Tropicana Cookies from Oni Seed Co. Like Tony Stark toiled in the cave, Blockhead made the effort in his laundry room without the budget, the staff or the laboratory equipment of the professionals.
Nor did he sift through 1,000 seedlings to find a winner. Blockberry (also known as Super Boof) was descended from just two females by Black Cherry Punch and one male by Trop Cookies – a “super smelly stallion with great structure.”
In 2019, Blockhead produced seeds solely for preservation. “I didn't have a plan for any of these seeds, I thought I'd save them for later.”

Fool considers himself a “seed junkie” – someone who spends too much on seeds to build a large collection for collecting purposes. “I just kept buying seeds like Pokémon cards.”
His network of fellow seed junkies connect online, mostly on Instagram, and Blockhead sent a pack of Blockberry seeds to a Michigan breeder, cloner, and influencer named Mobilejay.
Mobilejay germinated them all and selected the best, but never with great expectations. The strain has its roots in the Tangie variety, which some pot snobs consider “drained” and uncool; like cargo shorts or The Eagles.
Mobilejay remembers first growing it and “just joking around and saying, 'This is going to be stupid.' “These seeds are going to suck.'”

Boof is scatological pot slang for medium to low quality herbs. But by the end of the harvest, the “boof” in the corner had grown big, beautiful, sharp and strong.
“It was just a joke. “Look at Super Boof!” But the joke somehow stuck.
Fool doesn't like the superficial name. But cannabis culture took responsibility for creation. The heroic-ironic variety caught fire and the flower won prizes. “You can’t just take the name back,” Mobilejay said.

Great boof is a tangy hybrid weed strain created by crossing Black Cherry Punch and Tropicana Cookies. It has the same chunky, deep green buds as its parents, which look wet with silver calyxes. The effects of Super Boof are believed to be extremely relaxing and giggly.
Mobilejay released cuttings of Super Boof from Michigan in 2021 and 2022. Recipients of the clone then mothered their cuttings and made additional clones from the mothers, spreading Super Boof to Massachusetts and Oregon.
Super Boof is efficient to farm. She proved to growers her worth as a “yielder” – she was able to harvest the crucial three pounds of dried, cured buds per grow light. Also important: Super Boof produced nuggets of hashish when hydraulically pressed under heat to produce “rosin” and “live rosin.”
Twenty grams of Super Boof flowers yields almost 1 gram of hashish – a profitable yield of 4 to 5%.”
Mobilejay said: “My buddy in Boston called me at the end of 2021 and said, 'Bro, she's just dropping crazy, golden, perfect hash – oh shit!'”

“She likes everything,” Mobilejay said. “She’s a MAC truck – you can throw any amount of light at her and she’ll eat it.”
“She kills it outside,” he said, “very resistant to mildew. She's a monster.”
Super Boof has nearly doubled its presence on dispensary menus in the last year, reaching nearly 2,000 stores in the U.S. as of December. Few others demonstrated such menu speed: Lemon Cherry Gelato, Permanent Marker, Cap Junky, Zoap, Glitter Bomb and Cannarado's Slushie. But none have such a compelling Cinderella story.
The Super Boof Awards are just around the corner
The strain proved to be as critically acclaimed as it was rewarding to grow.
It's hard to keep track of all of Super Boof's wins, but they include:

In October, Super Boof received more votes (21) nationwide than any new strain except Permanent Marker in a nationwide poll of more than 900 budtenders – the Leafly Budtenders' Choice Survey.
The deal has been sealed – top hash maker Trichome Tortoise took 1st place back-to-back at Ego Clash in 2023 and 2024 for what it calls “Ze Boof” ice water hash. Dozens of picky, especially leading hash makers judge Ego Clash.

The final proof of Super Boof's greatness and worthiness as a Leafly strain in 2024? Like Chappell Roan or Taylor Swift, Super Boof's dominance attracts trolls.

In early December, hash guy Terp Hova mocked the strain on Instagram – the town square of weed – as a “Tangie for men who smoke in their mother’s basement.” Super Boof fans flooded the comments. Tangie's popularizers, DNA Genetics and Crockett Family Farms, expressed amusement.
Fool takes the dissident as a compliment. Of more than 9,000 varieties in the Leafly database – trolls the farm commitment from its work.
“It was funny that so many people were hurt. I didn't give a shit. I was just thrilled that he even knew what it was,” Blockhead said.
“It’s definitely a new and improved version of Tangie,” Mobilejay said. “People claim to hate it. But I’ve been laughing for years.”
Future boof
Super Boof stands at the intersection of a group of modern, loud orange-flavored weeds that differ from the “candy gas” of Gelato, Runtz, Jealousy, Permanent Marker, etc.
There are the parents Trop Cookies, Cherry Trop, Orange Creamsicle, L'Orange, Orange 43, Point Break from Surf Seeds and Wilson from Masonic Seeds.
Many breeders are now working on the Super Boof line, including Blockhead and Mobilejay (who don't speak to each other). The strain is easy to propagate – it produces lots of pollen and lots of seeds, further highlighting its all-star status.
Blockhead has Iceblock (Oreoz x Blockberry), an Original Z-cross and a Tiki Madman Headhunter x Blockberry.

Blockhead remains committed to making excellent, entertaining and definitive versions of every type of weed, whether it tastes like strawberry, grape, blueberry or gas.
“I’ll smoke anything for the most part. It just depends on my mood,” he said. “I just want to make superior crosses of all kinds so that everyone can be successful.”
Instead of trying to chase hype, he wants to “put together the perfect properties” and learn the lesson from “my first lucky mistake.”

Mobilejay says it's “awesome” and “so funny” how big Super Boof has become. “Yeah, it’s everywhere now – it’s crazy.”
The fact that Super Boof is holding its own on drugstore shelves alongside titans like Lemon Cherry Gelato and Permanent Marker “is so coincidental,” Mobilejay says. “There are these exotic candies and then Super Boof with a silly name and silly Tangie roots. And it turned out that it was.”
Growers have made packaging with Super Man-style images and are “looking forward to doing all these weird, stupid things,” Mobilejay said.
“But hey, both the regular people and the hash community love it.”
