Do you already know how to use a bong? Returning to marijuana after a lengthy break and looking for tips? Here are marijuana hacks for the average user, the cannabis enthusiast who loves to get high but wants to take it a step further:

1. Construction paper can keep your flowers fresh

There is no expiration date for marijuana. It is a dried herb and can have a long shelf life with proper storage and storage. One of the most popular storage methods is glass. Mason jars are great and can be found just about anywhere. With jar, your marijuana stays consistent…nothing gets in or out of the jar until you open it and allow oxygen in.

But sunlight is an enemy of cannabis; it loses effectiveness the longer it is exposed to light. The solution? Take some construction paper (available at craft stores) and cut it enough to wrap around the inside of your glass jar.

Your flowers will be protected from the light, stay fresh longer and retain their potency.

Tip: Use different colors for different varieties. For example, use black for indicas and navy blue for sativas.

2. Put a penny (or dime) in your grinder

Most advanced cannabis enthusiasts know what kief is. But there are some of you out there who are not quite sure how to get it.

The word keif comes from the Arabic word kayf, meaning pleasure or intoxication. Basically, it’s the resinous trichomes that build up after the cannabis buds have been sifted through either a grinder or sieve.

Kief is a THC-loaded powder. And it’s at the bottom of your grinder. However, there is an easy way to get more kief when grinding your buds: put a coin in the grinder. Take a dime or penny and clean it with rubbing alcohol. Place the coin in the grinding chamber where your cannabis will fall. Shake the grinder a few times. And there you have it: more kief.

3. Do you remember CDs? Keep a few with you

Before iTunes, Pandora, and other streaming music sites, you had to buy CDs to hear your favorite music. I know how barbaric.

If you have a few CDs left at home, keep some close to your stash. Here’s why:

When loading a head, carefully place the CD on your pipe so that the center of the CD is directly over your head. Drop your ground cannabis through the hole. No wasteful spills!

4. Do you have an orphan sock? save it

Next time you do a load of laundry and your dryer eats a sock, keep the orphaned sock. Or if you want to throw away a pair of socks, keep one.

Socks are great for storing and carrying gear. It’s not elegant and there are great cases for sale at most cannabis retailers, but it works in a pinch. You can use the sock to store and carry grinders, whistles, glasses, etc.

5. Sea salt and rubbing alcohol work wonders

Isopropyl alcohol, commonly known as rubbing alcohol, is a must-have for any cannabis enthusiast. It is the ideal cleaning solution for glass.

Place your pipe or bong in a ziplock bag with rubbing alcohol and sea salt. Gently shake the bag for 5-10 minutes. Leave the piece in the solution for another 20-30 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

It’s always a better user experience when your pipe is sparkling clean. And when you share something, your friend will appreciate the gesture. It’s the courtesy to do so.

6. Prevent your lips from drying out

Cannabis use can cause cotton in the mouth, red eyes and dry lips. So hydrate, keep Visine handy and stock up on lip balm.

Seriously, lip balm is underrated. Keep some in your pocket. In your purse. in your car

Added bonus: There are a few hemp-based lip balm lines out there. Find some and stock up.

7. Brushing your teeth has never felt so good

That may sound strange, but it’s true. Dentists recommend brushing for at least two minutes, but do you really take that long? When you’re a little high, time flies and you might even break the two-minute rule and keep cleaning.

If you have an electric toothbrush, all the better! The feeling is amplified and it just feels a lot better.

Added bonus: once you’ve brushed your teeth and your mouth tastes all like mint, it can curb cravings. Who wants to eat Doritos after brushing their teeth?
