What are the medical benefits of cannabis?

Research over the years has yielded results that suggest cannabis may be beneficial in treating some conditions. These are listed below.

Last year, a major report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine evaluated more than 10,000 scientific studies on the medical benefits and side effects of cannabis.

One area the report examined closely was the use of medicinal cannabis to treat chronic pain. Chronic pain is a leading cause of disability, affecting more than 25 million US adults

The review found that cannabis or products containing cannabinoids — which are the active ingredients in cannabis or other compounds that act on the same receptors in the brain as cannabis — are effective in relieving chronic pain.

Another comprehensive review of evidence, published last year in the journal Clinical Psychology Review, found that cannabis use can help people with alcohol or opioid dependence to combat their addiction.

But this finding can be controversial; The National Academies of Sciences study suggests that cannabis use actually increases the risk of abusing and becoming addicted to other substances.

Additionally, the more frequently someone uses cannabis, the more likely they are to develop a cannabis use problem. It is also known that individuals who started using the drug at a young age are at an increased risk of developing a cannabis use problem.
Depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and social anxiety

The review, published in the Clinical Psychology Review, evaluated all of the published scientific literature examining the use of cannabis to treat symptoms of mental illness.

The authors found some evidence to support the use of cannabis to relieve depression and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

However, they do point out that cannabis is not an appropriate treatment for some other mental illnesses, such as bipolar disorder and psychosis.

The review notes that there is evidence that cannabis may alleviate symptoms of social anxiety. Again, however, this is contradicted by the review from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, which instead found that regular cannabis users may actually tend to reduce social anxiety at an increased risk of social anxiety.

There is evidence that oral cannabinoids are effective against the nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy, and a few small studies have found that smoking cannabis may also help relieve these symptoms.

Some cancer cell studies suggest that cannabinoids can either slow the growth of some cancers or kill them. However, early studies testing this hypothesis in humans found that while cannabinoids are a safe treatment, they are not effective in controlling or curing cancer.

CBD is one of many substances found in cannabis. It’s not psychoactive. The drug used to treat these conditions is a purified form of CBD. The approval was based on findings from research and clinical studies.

A study published in 2017 found that CBD use resulted in far fewer seizures in children with Dravet syndrome compared to a placebo.

Seizures in Dravet syndrome are prolonged, repetitive, and potentially fatal. In fact, one in five children with Dravet syndrome does not reach the age of 20.

In the study, 120 children and adolescents with Dravet syndrome, all between the ages of 2 and 18, were randomly assigned to receive either an oral CBD solution or a placebo along with their usual medication for 14 weeks.
