How to store your weed through the winter
As winter approaches, so does the need to protect nature’s last harvests from the first frost. Cannabis is harvested all year round, but it is crucial to always preserve the buds as best as possible when purchasing.
Whether you’ve gotten the last ounce of a favorite strain or are taking the time to replenish your stash, storing cannabis properly can keep your buds fresh and fragrant all winter and beyond.

Studies suggest that UV light is the number one destroyer of cannabis potency. According to Medical Marijuana, Inc., “While direct sunlight is most detrimental to marijuana buds, even indirect light can result in a loss of potency.” With even indirect light affecting the longevity of cannabis, taking the time to shop for the perfect container is crucial.

There are several factors to consider when choosing a cannabis storage container. According to Healthline “Light, humidity, temperature and oxygen can all mess up cannabis and affect its aroma, flavor and potency potential.” Therefore, the container must be airtight to prevent ingress of unwanted moisture and oxygen. Be sure to have a container with a secure closure.
The material of the container is also important. Many pharmacies offer cannabis in plastic containers. This works for quick storage purposes, but when marijuana is being preserved over a long period of time, plastic is an enemy. Plastic containers leak air and can release some of their chemical properties. This can carry over to cannabis, altering its aroma and taste. Plastic can also cause sweating inside the container or bag, which can lead to mold growth and deterioration.

Airtight glass containers are ideal. If in doubt, use a mason jar. They are glass, airtight, inexpensive and always seem to be in fashion. Some brands have introduced opaque and dark tinted lenses that offer strong UV protection. This glass style is a perfect inexpensive option for storing marijuana.
Once you have the right container, it’s time to find the perfect storage location. Cannabis doesn’t like it when it’s too hot or too cold. Studies have shown that heat above 78 degrees Fahrenheit contributes to the deterioration of cannabis potency.

Also, don’t store marijuana in the freezer. The extreme cold dries out the cannabis and causes trichomes to break off. Instead, find a dark spot that maintains a temperature of around 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Storing cannabis is essential to its preservation, but buying quality products from reputable growers is just as important. The longevity of cannabis begins with the curing process that MedMen describes as such “the process of properly drying fresh cannabis to optimize potency, terpenes.” When cured optimally, cannabis can retain its potency and integrity for up to a year.
As the days get shorter and the air colder, you need to protect your cannabis properly. Find the perfect jar, a cool, dark spot in your home, and buy produce from trusted farmers. This ensures that you can enjoy lively and flavorful cannabis even when everything else around you seems cold and dormant.
