August 2022 Leafly HighLight: GMO Cookies strain

This August, Leafly invites you to enjoy the taste of cannabis. You know that taste. Not just cakes, cookies or fruit. dig deeper We talk funk.

Bored with the blueberry from Blue Dream or the icing on ice cream cake, sometimes you want to get weird. Spicy. Cheeky. Get in a jar of GMO cookies.

August’s Leafly HighLight ranks among the stinkiest top 40 strains in the $25 billion US cannabis industry. It’s above Chemdawg and way past Cheese. Only Diesel or Glue approach GMO in downright loud volume.

GMO Cookies descended from the mythical Chemdawg crossed with groundbreaking GSC (aka Girl Scout Cookies, but we won’t say that name). We just say GMO now, and the weedheads nod in agreement. It has an average of 4.7/5 stars based on 704 reviews.

First reviewed on Leafly in 2018, in 2022 GMOs can now be found in every corner of America. GMO crosses with live rosin can cost $100 and look like amazing clarified gold.

GMO smells dangerous. It triggers an emotional response. Some recoil and gag. Leafly reviewers explain:

  • GMO “smells like a skunk’s asshole.”
  • It “smells like garlic and gasoline.”
  • “It tasted like burnt garlic socks.”

And yet we dive into Legion. Why? Because GMOs are proving to be powerfully therapeutic for the body and soul, reviewers report. I mean, why do people eat blue cheese, take tequila body shots, or order Taco Bell’s Flamin’ Hot Cool Ranch Doritos Locos tacos? Danger wakes us.

Good things to do on GMO? It depends who you are. Leafy reviewers tend to get chilled, sleepy, and euphoric, but beware – GMO can shake a novice. The high THC can get the heart pumping, cause dizziness, and induce anxiety.

Experienced smokers use GMOs as a tool during the day and as a hobby at night. Reviewers found it helped them with mood issues, body aches, spasms, and migraines. Long-time smokers get the classic stone from GMO – secluded, but also focused on a task. Alien Labs’ Ted Lidie once told me, “GMOs get me high, just the way I want to get high.”

Again, Leafly reviewers explain:

  • “It deserves 5 stars for its pain-relieving and brain-soothing effects,” said one reviewer.
  • “This is one of the wildest terpene blends I’ve ever smelled, and boy does it pack a punch. Strong body, even stronger head, and boy was I LIT.
  • “That’s the kind of stuff you break out among friends, and you’re all floating around in this cross-eyed, floating GMO cookie bubble.”
  • “Goes well with pork katsu. I didn’t expect to find out.”

How much do GMO cookies cost?

(Sascha Beck/Leafly)

GMO completes the scale of price points. Outdoor and greenhouse GMO fields are insanely cheap considering how terpy they are. At the top of cannabis, LA’s Jungle Boys sold me Han Solo – GMO x Larry OG for a reasonable price, and it beats. The strain also yields tons of hash, making for a dabber’s delight. Ball out or budget – GMO has you covered.

Inferior middle class high grade
1 gram flower $8 $12 $18
3.5 grams of flower $20 $40 $60
1 gram trolley/pod $40 $50 $60
1 gram budder/dough/sauce/rosin (etc.) $40 $60 $90

Seeds of GMO biscuits

Greetings to the Spanish breeder Mamiko Seeds for GMOs. The seed packs came out as “Chem D x GSC”. Breeder Skunk Master Flex from Skunk House Genetics germinated a successful seed and named it GMO Cookies – a nod to a news article about transgenic dessert, but also how the strain got weird: how scientists modified it.

We are now in the world of GMOs. Over 155 GMO crosses are reported on Seedfinder, spanning five generations. Mamiko sells seeds on the Seed Bank for Humanity with seriously affordable cookie hybrids. Most state markets sell GMO clones at this point. At the top of the list, major California cloner Purple City Genetics sells heaps of GMO x Kush Mints (GovernMint Oasis). Other breeders also crossed the two popular parent strains, so expect variants like Garlic Cookies. GMO genes add volume to whatever you cross them with. Let’s grow electric mimosas from Bloom Seed Co. this year!

Awards for GMO cookies

(Sascha Beck/Leafly)

Chemdawg and GSC have produced so many award winning strains. Among them, GMO won a 2021 trophy for Best Smokability, as well as 2nd overall in the San Diego Cannabis Farmers Market plebiscite. GMO also took 4th and 7th place at the 2019 Emerald Cup – the toughest competition out there.

GMO Cookies Terpenes

The etymology of “funk” includes “smoke”, “spark”, “cheese” and “earthiness” and a power that is deeply felt. (Sascha Beck/Leafly)

GMO exudes the terp profile of geil, and we’re still investigating it. Laboratory samples labeled as GMO tested highly in the terp caryophyllene, limonene and myrcene. That tells me zaza and sleepy. It’s no surprise that a blast of THC and caryophyllene proves so effective—they’re the foundational combination of modern medicinal cannabis. It’s like saying DJ Diplo excels when he drops this beat. Moron. GMO understands the mission.

More highlights in August

Can’t get a taste of our highlight? You don’t have to fake the funk. Here are three more similar flavors and effects, new and old.

Slap N Tickle

GMO takes it to Slap N Tickle with Grape Pie – breeder Cannarado’s contribution to the GMO movement in 2022. Thick, beautiful and spicy – it’s a favorite of breeders and smokers at Freddy’s Fuego in Washington (they call it Big Baby) up Theory well-being in Massachusetts. GMO adds its smack to the cherry and grape dessert thrill of Grape Pie. Expect munchies and couchlock, so plan accordingly.

Chemdawg

Chemdawg. Hybrid. (David Downs & Sasha Beck/Leafly)

Follow GMO’s father – Chemdawg – for another hit with a pungent flavor and intense effect. Before OG Kush or Diesel, the mythical Chem reigned supreme. It’s for people who like to sniff gas fumes and unwind to Ryan Gosling’s brutal “The Gray Man”. THC-rich and energizing – this dog bites.

Cheese

Cheese. Hybrid. (David Downs & Sasha Beck/Leafly)

Before Chemdawg, Stoners had Cheese and UK Cheese. Both are Skunk #1 strains – one of the headwaters of modern cannabis. If you’ve ever grown Cheese, remember. Girlfriends issued ultimatums: “Cheese or me.” Cheese still shows up alone and in crosses like Compound Genetics’ new Rainbow Cheddar (Zkittlez x Cheese). The effects fall in the middle of the spectrum – hungry, sleepy, and giggly. When you see Cheese, never miss a whiff.

And that’s the Leafly HighLight for August 2022. Embrace the funk and see you next month.
