In 2000, the courts ruled that Canadians have the constitutional right to use cannabis as medicine. This change in the law gave medicinal patients the right to use only the bud and plant material.
In 2012, a medical cannabis bakery in Victoria BC was blown up by police. Cookie maker Owen Smith has been arrested and charged with human trafficking. Thankfully, he resisted the charges. Thanks to the 2015 R v Smith court ruling, medicinal cannabis can be used in any form. Rather than just having access to dried flower, the right to use edibles, topicals and concentrates has been enshrined in Canadian law.
