Get to know the six best pre-ground cannabis products in Canada

We don’t have flying cars (yet), but life in 2022 has its perks: grocery shopping can be done with a few taps on the phone and delivered right to your door, plus you can buy a variety of weed already pre-destroyed to perfection – and legal!

Delivery is great but ground cannabis flower could be better. The pre-ground product is having a moment for a number of reasons, most notably its convenience and low price.

No buster required or loops required. You simply open the bag of ground weed, sprinkle the good greens on your rolling papers, one-hitters or baking projects and enjoy.

If you’re striving for pre-ground perfection, consider these curated editors’ picks for six of the best types of ground cannabis currently available in Canada (in our opinion, at least).

Ground tropical thunder

brand: shredding

Licensed producer: Organization chart

dose: THC, 19.5-27.5%, CBC, 0-1%

Shred only sold ground cannabis when it launched. Today they also make pre-rolls and gummies, but they’ve established themselves as OG in the milled space, earning bragging rights.

Shred offers four different strains of ground weed, including Flower Power, Funk Master, Gnarberry, and Tropic Thunder, with the latter being the standout. Tropic Thunder is a hugely popular strain for its sweet taste of pineapple and mango, and nearly a third of Leafly reviewers note that it helps relieve anxiety.

Shred grows their Tropic Thunder ground indoors at their New Brunswick facility and packages it in an airtight bag along with a moisture pack to keep the pre-ground product super fresh.

Ground Big League Sour Kush

brand: Back Forty

Licensed producer: Kolab project

dose: THC, 17-23%, CBD, 0-1%

Indica dominant smokers, this one is for you. B40 has ground up its version of Sour Kush, a hybrid blend of OG Kush and Sour Diesel, making it so easy to enjoy the strain’s uplifting and cerebral effects.

Sour Kush, including B40’s Big League Sour Kush ground, is particularly pungent with that recognizable scent of diesel and citrus. These guys use high quality flowers and promise that you will not find any sticks, trim or other inferior parts in their milled product.

Ground Chocolate Mint AND Grind

brand: steel city green

Licensed producer: AB Laboratories

dose: THC, 18-24%, CBD, 0-2%

Steel City Green’s Chocolate Mint OG is a favorite here. (Editor’s note: It’s in my stash right now). If you’ve never smoked her, this cross between Emerald OG and Grandaddy Purple is a strong indica-dominant hybrid.

Steel City Green’s Chocolate Mint OG is a smooth and flavorful toke with sweet notes on the exhale. She has a robust terpene profile—myrcene, pinene, and guaiol—don’t be surprised if you’re looking for more.

The ground version is just as delicious as the brand’s conventional flower option of the same strain. Steel City Green packs their ground weed with a nitrogen infusion and moisture pack to mitigate the risk of a sad, dried-out product.

Ground CBD Dream

brand: Pure solar farms

Licensed producer: Pure solar farms

dose: THC, 6-12%, CBD, 2-8%

Pre-ground CBD buds aren’t as common as the THC varieties, luckily Pure SunFarms has a handful of different strains and strengths (depending on where you live). As with all legal cannabis products, supply can vary greatly by province.

BC’s Pure Sunfarms offers a low THC hybrid made from a blend of Blue Dream and Pure Sun CBD. The result: CBD Dream, a forward-leaning CBD high that won’t knock you out, but still leaves you with that *ahhh* relaxed feeling. Pure Sunfarms sells the ground buds coarsely ground, and you’ll notice earthy herbal flavors with hints of citrus and flowers when smoking or vaping.

Blendcraft ground flower

brand: Blendcraft

Licensed producer: We are growing BC

dose: THC, 23-29%, CBD, 2-8%

Blendcraft — a sub-brand of Qwest — offers a ground flower option that’s sold at various retailers across the country, including government pharmacies like Ontario’s OCS and private stores like Choom in British Columbia.

Another high THC option, this product is a choice of choice for people chasing that heavy body feeling or have a high tolerance and like something that hits hard.

What specific strains does it include? That is unclear. Blendcraft calls the mix a marriage of “our top strains, made from the densest buds and occasionally brought back from our old vault of genetic greatness”. This potent blend of ground bud with terpenes including caryophyllene, limonene, and bisabolol is tasty, if mysterious.

Sativa Cropped Harvest Ground

brand: Divvy

Licensed producer: Aleafia Health

dose: THC, 15-21%, CBD, 0-1%

Prefer your ground buds to be more uplifting and sativa dominant? Divvy makes ground sativa cannabis that contains less THC than others on this list. Launched just last year, this brand aims to fill the void when it comes to budget-friendly weed in Canada.

Divvy initially introduced its product offering with traditional flowers and pre-rolled buns, but has since expanded its product portfolio to include options for ground flowers.
