5 Exotic Weed Strains You Can Get in Portland

From pollen to plant, these Oregon strains are created by some of the most dedicated breeders in the state.

The state of Oregon has a longstanding relationship with the cultivation and breeding of cannabis. It’s a big part of what makes the state such a special destination for weed lovers.

Oregon has long forged its own distinctive, original cannabis strains, including DJ Short’s Blueberry, a worldwide phenomenon with roots in 1970’s Eugene, and modern projects like Surfr Seeds’ Grandpa’s Gun Chest.

Historically, the state’s cannabis breeders have drawn from the local terroir, as well as Oregon’s position as the liaison between California and Washington, to amass and recreate genetic treasures along the West Coast.

That’s why we’re highlighting this year for 420 unique, exotic strains from Oregon farms that breed their own strains or grow standout versions of strains created by local breeders. A number of these strains are available elsewhere, but the versions here are unique to Oregon and showcase the structure and character of contemporary Oregon cannabis.

Supa Durban (Deep Creek Gardens)

Supa Durban is a cross between Durban Poison and Super Silver Haze grown by Deep Creek Gardens and bred by Dynasty Genetics. Reminiscent of the dizzying hazes of decades past, Supa Durban offers a euphoric, day-quenching high characteristic of terpinolene-dominant strains, with a primary bubblegum scent.

Although Hazes were once widespread, the majority of commercial breeders have phased out long-flowering terpinolene-dominant sativas in favor of fast-flowering hybrids with more THC. But not Supa Durban Stewards Deep Creek Gardens.

Established by Dynasty Genetics founder Professor P., Deep Creek Gardens is populated with cuts bred and selected by him and originally released under the Dynasty Genetics name.

Deep Creek’s menu offers a rare glimpse into the cannabis flavors that put Oregon on the map: they retain the spirit and aroma of traditional PNW classics like Ice Queen and the fabled Blue Magoo, an early berry-scented strain derived from the DJ Short’s Blueberry line.

Other dynasty-bred highlights include Megafauna (Kali Snapple x Super Silver Haze f3) and Huckleberry Meringue (Ice Queen x Oregon Huckleberry #5).

Dogwalker OG x Horchata, aka Zuyaqui (Eastwood Gardens)

Dogwalker OG x Horchata marijuana strainDogwalker OG x Horchata by Eastwood Gardens. (Matt Stangel for Leafly)

Dogwalker OG x Horchata by Portland-based Eastwood Gardens is a version of a strain officially named Zuyaqui by Oregon breeder Wyeast Farms.

Wyeast gave breeders early access to valuable seeds from their Horchata line, and Eastwood happily took up pheno hunting, retaining genetics from Zuyaqui and sister strain Half Pint.

The featured Dogwalker OG x Horchata will draw your nose into the glass with an incense of cedarwood, clove, and musky gasoline likely inherited from the Dogwalker OG. Smoking reveals creamy mentholated gases, doughy cinnamon and sour flavors of horchata.

Established in 2013, Eastwood Gardens is operated by two Portland Native Americans who began during the state’s Med Era. The Farm explores groundbreaking flavors that bridge the local scene and larger national trends.

Though they operate a small-batch grow, Eastwood has recently expanded to a second location and will soon be releasing a line of homemade rosin made from their squishy and smelly buds.

Cherry Lime Slushy (Heroes of the Farm)

Cherry Lime slushy marijuana strainCherry Lime Slushy from Heroes of the Farm. (Matt Stangel for Leafly)

Cherry Lime Slushy is a citrusy hybrid of Tahiti Lime and Cherry Stout bred and grown by Sandy, Oregon cannabis producer Heroes of the Farm.

Founded in 2005, Heroes is known for breeding and growing its own strains that draw on genetics from the Pacific Northwest while also adding modern flavors to their breeding pool.

Their popular line of Cherry Stouts is based on a combination of classic Cherry Pie and their very own Guinness, a cross between Scooby Snacks and Mystery Machine. The standout strains in the Cherry Stout line include Cherry Truffle Shuffle, as well as several phenos from Cherry Stout’s f2 generation.

Still, we couldn’t resist introducing Heroes’ Cherry Lime Slushy. Among her competitors, the strain stands out with a pungent sour-lime bouquet and tension-free but alert effects.

Aromatically, Cherry Lime Slushy is dominated by a bright and tart lime with hints of graphite and bitter cherry. The strain inherits key traits from Tahiti Lime, known for its pungent, candy-like lime scent and lively creative energy. The cherry stout seems to keep the strain from becoming too racy while leaving a slight berry or stone fruit note.

Look for Cherry Lime Slushy and other Heroes of the Farm Cherry Stout hybrids at select dispensaries in Oregon.
