14-year-old epilepsy patient is seizure-free after two years of medical cannabis treatment

Texas Original Compassionate Cultivation (TXOG) announced that 14-year-old patient James Challenger had not had a seizure in two years. He has also stopped taking all oral seizure pills as of March 2022 – a reduction from more than 20 pills a day to none after adding medical cannabis to his treatment plan.

As one of TXOG’s original medicinal cannabis patients, James’ milestone represents the proven efficacy of medicinal cannabis in treating epilepsy and symptoms of autism.

“Medical cannabis is the only cure that has worked wonders for James, and our family is grateful for this encouraging treatment option that has allowed him to avoid surgery and harsh anti-seizure drugs,” said Mikelle and Mike Challenger, James’ parents. “Since James started his TXOG prescription we have seen an incredible improvement in his daily life and we are delighted to celebrate his two year seizure free anniversary last month. We firmly believe that medicinal cannabis is a healthy option that should be available to all Texans looking to manage their debilitating conditions and symptoms.”

The Challenger family is committed to increasing access to medical cannabis in Texas and supporting the expansion of the state’s Compassionate Use Program (CUP) to allow more people to benefit from the medicine. By removing the CUP restriction on qualifying conditions — and getting rid of the THC cap — the family hopes doctors will have more decision-making authority to decide what’s best for their patients. Challengers know an expanded program would mean more Texans could experience the improvements James has seen.
