10 red states that will turn green in 2022

Federal marijuana legalization may be slow in the US, but states are gradually lifting their marijuana bans. In just the past few years, interest in medical and recreational marijuana has skyrocketed, often thanks to success stories in states that have been at the forefront of legalization.

While the current political climate polarizes many issues, marijuana remains an issue that has support from both sides of the aisle. Most states that have fully adopted recreational marijuana are blue, but there are many red states currently trying to level the playing field.

Even states with conservative strongholds are jumping into the marijuana revolution. In fact, there are 10 red states striving to become “greener” by the end of 2022.

Arkansas

Arkansas has the potential to further relax its marijuana restrictions in 2022. In 2016, Arkansas voters passed a measure legalizing medical marijuana. This year alone, three leisure activities are up for discussion and possible voting. A suggestion is called Arkansas Marijuana Amendment of 2022, “which would allow for a number of cannabis businesses proportional to the state’s population,” according to the Arkansas Democrat Gazette.

Idaho

Idaho is a state where marijuana is currently illegal even for medical purposes. This year, a possible electoral action led by the pro-legalization group The Idaho Way attempts to end marijuana prohibition in Idaho. the Initiative to legalize marijuana in Idaho may appear on a ballot in November. This initiative would allow adults over the age of 21 to possess, use and distribute up to three ounces of cannabis in the state.

Kansas

Kansas Democrats are pushing to get a resolution through the House and Senate that would put recreational marijuana on the ballot.

“After many years of trying to get some of these things done, maybe it’s time to turn it over to voters and give them an opportunity to weigh it,” Rep. Jason Probst told Kansas City KSHB. This initiative would allow Kansas voters to decide the fate of marijuana in the sunflower state as early as November 2022.

Kentucky

Although Kentucky has made strides in the hemp world, it remains one of 13 remaining states where marijuana is entirely illegal. Some Democratic lawmakers are trying to change that this year.

The bill proposed this year “would not only create a regulatory and tax structure for recreational marijuana, but would also create the automatic deletion of marijuana-related offenses within one year,” the government said Louisville Courier Journal. The bill is unlikely to garner Republican support, but it is a bold first step toward relaxing Kentucky’s strict marijuana laws.

Mississippi

In 2022, Mississippi became the 37th state to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes. Gov. Tate Reeves signed legislation giving people with debilitating medical conditions access to medical marijuana.

Recreational marijuana is still illegal in Mississippi, and the support needed to legalize it may be years away. However, this new law ended state bans on marijuana.

Missouri

The Missouri legislature introduced legislation that, if passed, would legalize marijuana for adult use. The Cannabis Freedom Act was introduced in February by Missouri Republican Ron Hicks. If passed, the law would grant release to nonviolent marijuana offenders and allow legal use of marijuana by adults.

“The Cannabis Freedom Act is the result of input from many different stakeholders, including members of law enforcement and those who have been jailed for conduct that society now finds acceptable,” Hicks said called.

Nebraska

Nebraska has legalization pending that would put a measure legalizing marijuana in the state on the ballot in 2022. The bill “would put the issue of legalizing the use, possession and retail sale of adult marijuana on the ballot before voters are due to decide in the 2022 election,” it said NORMAL.
