Leafly’s Guide to Products in the Recreational Marijuana Stores in Montana
On January 1, 2022, cannabis will finally be available for sale to all adults 21 and over in the great state of Montana.
While the launch of the legal market in big sky land is a cause for celebration, it can be a bit overwhelming even for first-time customers who may have many questions: How much can (or should) I buy? Are there low-dose edibles for beginners? Which varieties are best for my needs?

Below is information about the different types of products available in Montana stores, from flowers and edibles to tinctures and concentrates. Trust us, your busy budget tenders will thank you for getting down to the basics.
Read on to make sure your first experience of buying Montana cannabis is stress-free, knowledgeable, and fun.
Remember, Buyers, Montana law allows the possession of up to an ounce of cannabis or its equivalent in other products. Your budget tender will keep track of your total for you.

Flowers and pre-rolls
Welcome to the world of legal cannabis, where the good old traditional weed is known as a flower and professionally rolled joints are called pre-rolls.
Flower is sold in a variety of quantities, from a gram (enough for a joint or two smaller) to a full ounce. It is often sold packaged, although some stores display their cannabis in “deli-style” glasses behind a counter and handpick your nuggets.
Montana cannabis vendors pride themselves on their bloom. While much of this is grown indoors, some companies also use greenhouses and tire houses. There’s a lot of variety. Some stores focus on classics like Blue Dream, Montana Silvertip, and Leaflys 2021 Strain of the Year Dosidos, while others love rare and exotic strains and even make their own genetics.
Flowers can also be purchased in pre-rolled joints, which are usually sold in half or gram sizes.
Like all cannabis products, flower can produce a range of effects, from mental stimulation and an energetic cerebral noise to relaxed muscles and improved sleep.
In Montana, licensed stores are prohibited from selling flowers that contain more than 35% THC.
Be sure to ask your budtenders about the strains and potency range that will work best for you.
Edibles
Many customers prefer to consume their cannabis in edible form. Made with cannabis extracts or cannabis-infused oils and butters, these products are extremely discreet and their effects can last much longer than inhaled cannabis.
We recommend new consumers start with a low dose of between 2 and 5 milligrams of THC before venturing up.
Edibles are often sold in packs containing a total of 100 mg of THC, with each “serving” being dosed at 10 mg. Check the package and ask your budtender about the dosage before leaving the counter. (Seriously, you ask. Everyone wants you to have a good experience.)
A wide variety of edibles are available in Montana, from gummy bears and chocolates to infused olive oils and honey sticks.
Capsules
While not as readily available as other edibles, some customers prefer to consume their cannabis by swallowing capsules. These products are also available in different potencies and have effects on the body similar to edibles, as both are absorbed through the body’s gastrointestinal system.
Vape batteries and vape cartridges
Are you looking for a gentler, cheaper way to inhale cannabis? Vaporizer cartridges (also known as vape carts) might be the right thing for you.
A vape cart is a glass cartridge that is pre-filled with a gram or half a gram of cannabis oil. Most vape carts work in conjunction with a rechargeable vape pen battery, sold separately, that heats the oil, activating the various chemical components in it.
Vape carts can also be sold as a single unit with a single-use battery.
To make vape cartridges, concentrated oils are extracted from cannabis plants using a handful of methods, including solvent-based CO2 extraction, distillate, or solvent-free pressed hash rosin, like the Glacier Solventless product shown in the photo above.
Vape carts contain either a single type of oil or a mixture of several types. As such, they are typically labeled as either sativa-dominant, indica-dominant, or a hybrid of the two.
Concentrates
Customers can also purchase cannabis in various extracted and concentrated forms, including shatter, crumble, diamonds, and terpene sauce. These products are typically vaporized or dabbed.
Cannabis concentrates tend to be extremely potent and are not recommended for beginners or consumers with a low tolerance to THC.

Tinctures
Many cannabis users love tinctures, in which cannabis is diluted in oil or alcohol and given under the tongue with a dropper. Tinctures are extremely easy to dose and come in a wide variety of potencies and mixtures.

They treat certain areas of the body, such as knees or other joints, without triggering an intoxicating effect.
