Former wrestling superstars are now getting into the marijuana game
“Cannabis” was once a topic no one talked about. Their production, use and distribution were illegal and punishable by law. But that was in the past, things change quickly, especially in the world of wrestling.
Its medicinal and relaxing powers can no longer be hidden. More and more weed activists are praising the plant. Those activists include old-school wrestling superstars. Although it was illegal at the time, weed has been an important part of their lifestyle, especially for the past three decades.
Fans wondered how the stars could deal with the pain and pressure that came with the sport; They had to deal with intense grips and bumps. How would you have done without the pain relieving effects of weed?
Thankfully, with recent political reforms and the weed perspective, a few ex-wrestling superstars have come out to discuss the benefits of weed. They are weed activists now and seem to be taking advantage of it to extend their careers.
Wrestling superstars turned into weed activists

Here are some of the most prominent wrestling superstars who are still in the news for not only wrestling but “weed activism” as well.
Jesse “The Body” Ventura
The name ‘Jesse The Body’ rings a bell not only in wrestling, but in several areas. He is an American politician, television presenter, actor, writer, political commentator, and professional retired wrestler.
Ventura began as a member of the US Navy Underwater Demolition Team in the Vietnam War. Soon after leaving the military, he became a professional wrestler from 1975 to 1986 under the ring name “Jesse ‘The Body’ Ventura”.
He graced our screens both as a performer and as a color commentator. Fame called when he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2004. Over time, he appeared in the very first iteration of The XFL, which took place in 2001.
He was deeply interested in politics and pursued his dream of becoming governor when he was out of the ring. As a candidate for the Reform Party, he won the governorship of Minnesota. He remained governor between 1998 and 2003.
Ventura is known for another reason – cannabis legalization activism. He is committed to ensuring that cannabis is legalized in every corner of the country. He was inspired to do this after watching a close friend helplessly suffer from seizures. After traveling to Colorado to source products that would end the seizures, he began pushing for such products to be legalized. He even went so far as to write a book called Jesse Ventura’s Marijuana Manifesto.
Rob Van Dam
American actor and professional wrestler Robert Alexander Szatkowski was born on December 18, 1970. Popularly known as his ring name – Rob Van Dam (RVD) left his mark on World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA).
His name was on the lips of almost every wrestling fan in the 1990s, especially after he won the ECW Television Championship by defeating Bam Bam Bigelow. With many wins and awards, Rob Van Dam was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2021.
In fact, he’s one of two wrestlers to ever win the WWE, ECW, and TNA World Championships. the other wrestler is Bobby Lashley. Right now RVD is one of the most prominent and ‘oldest’ weed activists in the wrestling world.
Weed activism seems to be as strong a passion for Van Dam as wrestling.
He received an award once and was named the winner of the most watched WWE Heavyweight Championship. Surprisingly, he declined because of a minor cannabis possession arrest. That happened in 2006. The incident was just a career break when he returned to become a vocal marijuana advocate.
His passion for getting cannabis legalized everywhere is evident in much of his endeavors. It should also be noted that he owns a CBD brand.
The Godfather / Papa Shango
The professional wrestler, who was named Charles Wright at birth, is better known by his ring name “The Godfather”. He was born on May 16, 1961 and is an American wrestler.
He became a star after participating in the World Wrestling Federation in the 1990s to 2000s. It went through a few gimmick changes over the years; the most memorable were The Godfather, Kama, Papa Shango, Kama Mustafa.
Charles Wright’s awards include: USWA Unified World Heavyweight Champion (twice), WWF Intercontinental Champion (once) and WWF World Tag Team Champion (once).
In 2016 he became part of the WWE Hall of Fame.
Despite being viewed as a strong man, most of his biggest fans didn’t understand the pain behind the wins. He suffered severe injuries, body aches and pains, and all the pain an athlete goes through.
All of this continued until he started using marijuana. He claimed that his knees and back felt better. This opened his eyes to the therapeutic effects of marijuana. Today, The GodFather is a cannabis activist and firmly believes that marijuana saved his career.
Val Venis
Sean Allen Morley was born on March 6, 1971 and is popularly known by his ring name – Val Venis. He is a Canadian wrestler, he became famous for his participation in the World Wrestling Federation / World Wrestling Entertainment (WWF / WWE) from 1998 to 2009.
Aside from his other achievements, he became the youngest man and the first non-Mexican to win the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship.
After a fruitful career in sports, Val Venis is now nicknamed – Kaptain Kannabis, after experiencing the benefits of cannabis. In fact, he currently runs Health 4 Life pharmacies in Arizona.
