Tea May Break Down Psilocybin Mushrooms Chemist Says – A Lemon Solution

Tea is a well-known way to ingest a dose of psychedelic mushrooms. Soaked mushrooms cause less nausea with more manageable on and off times. Unfortunately, however, chemists fear that brewing a tea can break down psilocybin fungi.

How a prodrug becomes actively psychedelic

Researchers are focusing on psilocybin, one of the main compounds found in mushrooms. Still it does not create psychedelic effects. A chemical reaction has to take place to turn psilocybin into a psychoactive metabolite. And this explains one of three reasons why tea is a traditional delivery method for psilocybin-containing mushrooms in multiple cultures.

In particular, dephosphorylation occurs in the body of humans and fungi. This process turns psilocybin into psilocin, an active tryptamine. The current theory is that the reaction in the gut leads to nausea and delayed onset.

We asked an expert whether brewing tea can break down psilocybin mushrooms and whether Lemon Tek can activate tryptamines more gently. Delic Labs is one of the few research institutions in North America that has a license to study psilocybin mushrooms. In continuation of her psychedelic research, Delic recently published a paper in collaboration with Havn Life on improving the psilocybin test. So what happens when you steep mushrooms containing psilocybin in boiling water?

When you boil this compound, it dephosphorylates to psilocin very quickly. So when you have psilocybin in and cook it in a tea, it goes from its prodrug form to the active form.

What I don’t know is whether heat destabilizes or breaks down the active ingredient psilocin. So I can’t tell right now if it has a huge impact on potency, but extraction is what you are looking for. With tea, you want to get the flavors, the flavors, the caffeine, and all the good things in tea. And I imagine that this is the same strategy with psilocybin – brewing a mushroom tea.

Dr. Eric Jannuson

When psilocybin mushrooms are first extracted and dephosphorylated in a tea, the active tryptamines from the upper digestive system can be quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. This process prevents latent metabolism in the liver and shortens the length of the experience when consuming raw, uncooked mushrooms.

When life lasts you a lemon, make some psilocybin tea

Dr. Eric Janusson, Ph.D., distinguishes himself as a senior chemist at Delic Labs in analytical chemistry. President and CSO Dr. Markus Roggen, who received a Ph.D. in organic chemistry agreed with the idea of water-soluble extraction but pointed out the added importance of edible acids.

A couple of things, first, psilocybin is super soluble in water, so that’s the important part. Why is nobody brewing cannabis tea because THC is not water soluble.

Second, a lot of people supposedly use some lemon juice or other edible acids – like vinegar. While your stomach acid definitely does and [psilocybin] becomes dephosphorylated in the digestive system. If you did the previous “activation” it could possibly be absorbed in the gum area so that you have an additional intake in the mouth. But that goes into that [pharmacokinetic] Rich.

The author of this story is also not trained as a doctor or pharmacologist. However, a look at the literature revealed that some psilocybin is later converted in the liver. In addition, psilocin converts to an inactive metabolite in the deeper intestine, which can, however, be returned to psilocin during late metabolism. In contrast, psilocin without psilocybin – for example after brewing into a tea – does not go through the same late metabolism, as it should be eliminated before it can react with enzymes in the lower intestinal area.

Tea from the day before

If heat degrades psilocybin mushroom tea, is time a problem?

Yes, it’s a problem because psilocybin is relatively stable. However, psilocin is not stable to oxidation. [So] In the air, psilocin breaks down very quickly into unusable and uninteresting compounds. So psilocybin is the storage package for psilocin.

So if you “preactivate” [turn psilocybin into psilocin], you have to activate it very shortly before the actual consumption. If you “preactivate” your tea and then put it in the refrigerator for next week, it won’t work. It will be a very bitter, useless tea.

We will shortly be able to work out perfect formulations for tea and lemon tek from further analyzes. Because over time, an exact quantification will determine the exact rates of dephosphorylation and degradation of various tryptamines in mushrooms. Now that we can create such a card, wording it right will soon ensure that your favorite tea recipe doesn’t break down psilocybin mushrooms.
