Are Mexican marijuana cartels operating in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest?
Various connections suggest that many of Oregon County’s illegal farms are due to Mexican cartels. Illegal cannabis growers are started by various gangs of American and foreign descent. Many of these farms were left alone for a while for investigative purposes, until law enforcement officers got that long hiatus.
Illegal cannabis operations in Oregon
In the past year alone, at least two cannabis farms were raided by security agencies in Oregon. The operations of these illegal operators have grown bolder with each raid, particularly in southern Oregon. These illegal cultivation operations take advantage of the employment drought in these areas and the Covered Areas to maximize profits and evade law enforcement.
A few weeks ago, Jackson County’s Governing Council declared a state of emergency over the increasing number of illegal cannabis cultivation activities within its borders. According to district officials, building these illegal sites has overwhelmed local judicial authorities. The local resources in these areas have also reached their limits. The officials informed Governor Kate Brown in a letter. This letter has also been sent to state lawmakers for an expeditious response. It also included a detailed request for more staff to reduce the workload of current employees working on compliance with local laws and code compliance efforts in the county. The Jackson Board of Commissioners also called for more funding to run the agencies.
The recent events in Jackson County are reason enough for the Oregon state government to curb these illegal operations. Jackson County Commissioner Rick Dyer expressed his displeasure with the current situation during a press conference. He said these unregulated marijuana growers in Oregon were responsible for other illegal activities such as forced labor, human trafficking and unsafe working conditions. Most of the workers who work in these locations do so in precarious conditions.
Oregon has laws that allow cannabis trafficking for licensed businesses. It makes no sense for illegal operators to intimidate and abuse workers just to maximize profits in a state that already allows licensed operations. The majority of these workers are often minors, unregistered immigrants, or parents of very young children.
Dealing with this cartel activity
The longer the illegal operations are allowed to go on, the worse the human rights situation becomes. These operations aren’t just limited to Jackson County. The neighboring districts of Klamath and Josephine have also declared a state of emergency because of these activities.
A 27,000 square foot potato shed was found in Klamath County filled with an illegal cannabis crop, some of which had gone through some processing stages. That incident, which occurred less than a month ago, had to be the largest illegal cannabis raid in the county. The sheriff, Chris Klaber, expressed his shock when he told local reporters that it was the first time in his 30 years as an officer in the country that he had seen such an amount of contraband in Klamath.
Klaber described the entire action as organized crime, which must be nipped in the bud. After further investigation, the potato shed was linked to two other illegal cannabis sites in the county. Law enforcement agencies need to reorient themselves in view of the country’s current security issues. You now know where you stand in this fight. According to Klaber, they are difficult to understand, but far behind.
The region’s stance sends a unified message to the executive and legislative branches of the state. State officials will have a hard time ignoring a cry for help from three different counties.
In this way, the government can also “kill three birds with one stone” and develop an efficient solution to rid the region of these illegal crops. It’s a regional problem, so a regional solution will solve it.
Local resources: Den Brunt. wear
The illegal operations in the southern region of Oregon are more or less crippling local resources. The Oregon State Police Basin’s inter-agency Narcotics Enforcement Team appears to be on top of the latest investigation. Sergeant Cliff Barden announced that the growers have ties to national and international drug cartels.
Barden also announced that the agency believed the cartels were deliberately trying to overwhelm the system with so many illegal products. The strategy of these illegal organizations to produce so much illegal cannabis is most likely a way to divert local law enforcement from other crimes.
Even now, the authorities are unable to keep pace with the increase in illegal activity in the country.
Since the illegal operations became uncontrollable, smaller independent, unlicensed operators have settled in to capitalize on the resulting chaos. The larger growing areas receive orders from drug lords inside and outside the country and Mexico.
The region’s proximity to the Emerald Triangle in California also feeds the illegal activities. California is another hotspot for illegal cannabis operations. Binet traced many of the plants in the area back to illegal operations in California. These medium-sized California establishments act as brokers for illegal cannabis sites in Oregon and major drug cartel operators in Mexico. Most of these various stage operations can be traced back to joint drug cartels outside the country.
last words
Aside from the illegal cultivation operations of cartel farms in the area, law enforcement agencies have also found that at least 70 percent of licensed hemp farms illegally cultivate cannabis. Barden said there are at least three times as many unregistered hemp and cannabis crops for every registered hemp crop.
The state of emergency and the increase in staff and funding will help slow these unlicensed activities until they cease entirely.
“The main objective for now is to show that the southern region of Oregon will not be a haven for illegal cannabis cultivation and processing,” said Sergeant Barden. Gradually, these organized crime operations will find it very difficult to make a profit in these areas.
