Getting a Bachelor’s Degree in Weed?

It’s been a good year for the cannabis industry in the United States as flexibility around cannabis continues to grow. More and more states are opening their doors to legalizing cannabis and the job market in the industry is exploding. That’s not all; Colleges and universities across the country are also committed to cannabis. Many learn that it is best to keep up with the new trend. Many of these colleges have started offering degrees and courses in the cannabis field. And one of the colleges ready to dive into the cannabis field is LIM College.

More about LIM …

LIM College was founded in 1939 by Maxwell F. Marcus, an expert in retail and education, as the Laboratory Institute of Merchandising. LIM College was later accredited and authorized to award undergraduate degrees by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education. In 2002, Elizabeth S. Marcus became president of the college. And in 2009 the board moved to LIM College.

LIM College offers several undergraduate programs in the fields of fashion merchandising, management, fashion media and marketing. Minor subjects are also offered in various areas such as Digital Design and Photography, Sustainability, Global Studies, Interior and Residential Concepts, and English. Several associate degree programs are also offered.

A closer look at LIM

LIM College is a prestigious private college specializing in the fashion business in the United States, but the focus has changed over the past week. LIM took the bold step of offering a Bachelor of Business Administration degree focused on the cannabis industry. This promotion makes LIM the first college in the United States to offer the cannabis industry undergraduate degree.

New York State recently approved the college to start a BBA in the cannabis business. Applications for the degree program for transfer students and the inaugural class of freshmen starting in autumn 2022 are currently being accepted. The LIM cannabis program is offered both online and on campus. The aim is to provide students with industry-specific and business-related core knowledge in the legal cannabis industry. And this knowledge will help students fill roles such as product development, marketing, regulatory issues, and retail in the cannabis industry upon graduation.

Just last month, New York City lawmakers legalized recreational cannabis use by adults in the state. This gives the cannabis industry the potential to grow into an industry valued at $ 4.2 billion. If so, the cannabis industry will become one of the largest markets in the country. With the new regulation, New Yorkers can now own cannabis. For recreational use, a maximum of three ounces of cannabis or twenty-four grams of concentrated cannabis is allowed. However, pharmacies have yet to open in New York City.

In the United States, cannabis is currently legalized in about 18 states, including the District of Columbia. According to New Frontier Data, the US cannabis industry will have $ 43 billion in sales by 2025.

LIM College President Elizabeth S. Marcus mentioned that explosive job growth in the cannabis industry has left a void that needs to be filled. She said the void has led employers in the cannabis sector to seek skills that professionals in the fashion industry possess. Talent encompasses both mastery of fashion and extensive knowledge of the cannabis industry. This growth and the vast opportunities that the cannabis industry has to offer has led LIM to offer a BBA.

Hence, LIM is preparing for graduation and sending students with both skills into the cannabis industry. Elizabeth S. Marcus claims the college and the students they send will connect with the cannabis industry. LIM’s Business Director P. Londrigan also added that the students would transfer their knowledge and skills in the fashion industry to the cannabis industry. He mentioned that skills in the fashion industry such as marketing, sales, and retailing have been adapted to many industries. And adapting these skills to the cannabis industry will be no exception.

Professionals such as Marianne Cursetjee, co-founder and CEO of Alibi Cannabis, and Chris Jones, founder of Cannofabis Xpress, will take cannabis main courses at LIM College. Those who have advised on program development include the Arcview Group’s Community Director for Comme Unity, Sarrah Falvo, and the Chief Commercial Officer of Community Growth Partners, Penelope Nam-Stephen.

Nam-Stephen mentioned that the program is pretty precise, for the best, as the cannabis industry needs entry-level executives. With these executives, the industry can be adequately viewed through a business-oriented and professional perspective. Nam-Stephen also said that having a credible pipeline of talent in the cannabis industry would help it achieve constant and effective growth. Most importantly, Nam-Stephen emphasized how well a conventional academic environment serves as a pathway into the cannabis industry.

Colleges and universities rely on cannabis

LIM College is the first college in New York City to accept cannabis, but it is certainly not the first in the United States. Oaksterdam University is believed to be the very first university in the United States to offer in-class cannabis education. And since Oaksterdam University took this bold step, other colleges and universities have followed suit.

Some of the universities that offer cannabis education programs in the United States include:

Western Washington University

Western Washington University works with Green Flower, an industry and media education platform. The university announced the new program earlier this year to fill the skills gap.

University of West Illinois

In February 2020, Western Illinois University launched two minor subjects, cannabis culture and production. The program started in the fall semester 2020.

Clark University

Massachusetts is home to Clark University, proud to hold the country’s first cannabis regulatory certificate. The program was launched in June 2019 and offers student advice and local politics.

Northern New Mexico College

Northern New Mexico College, based in EspaƱola, also works with SeedCrest, a government education provider. The college started the program on March 22, 2022.
