Dr. Raphael Mechoulam discovers more powerful laboratory-made cannabinoids than natural cannabis plants
A few months ago, the father of marijuana research, Professor Raphael Mechoulam, presented his latest discovery: cannabidiolic acid (EPM 301). His introduction of the latest patented substance caused a lot of excitement in the marijuana industry, especially in the medical cannabis sector.
Its compound is completely stable, synthetic, and an acid-based cannabinoid molecule. It was announced to the world in partnership with EPM, a global biotechnology company based in America. EPM tries to bridge the gap between the pharmaceutical industry and the cannabis market.
The EPM301
Professor Mechoulam explained that EPM developed a method that works with the original cannabis substance. He goes on to claim that while everyone else was talking about CBD and THC, these were secondary compounds that we later found in the plant. Mechoulam claims that an acid first appears in the plant and they become the “mysterious” worlds of substances that are even stronger than cannabinoids.
But the cannabinoid acids were not stable, making them useless to the pharmaceutical sector and its drug developers until now. These acids have become stable and Professor Mechoulam is ready to show us why this is such a big deal.
His recent comments resulted from the development of a system that would make it easy to tune the acids so that they become stable enough to be used on a large scale. This fantastic news also opens up more opportunities for pharmaceutical analysis, data acquisition and experimentation.
He explained that his team collected a cannabidiolic acid and stabilized it using a humble chemical process: this is known as esterification, the substance became stable. The team had previously started researching the active ingredient and discovered that the particular substance can suppress anxiety and nausea.
Anyone who has had to care for a cancer patient will agree that nausea and anxiety are both common symptoms of cancer that weigh on patients. Prof. Mechoulam’s team, who discovered suppressants for both symptoms through cannabidiol, is further confirmation that cannabis has so much more to offer the oncology sector.
This will massively change the lives of cancer patients already on chemotherapy and people struggling with certain diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and psoriasis.
The oncology sector in 88. invent and redesign
THC and CBD provide relief to people struggling with various inflammatory conditions, nausea, anxiety, and depression are not new. Researchers have long confirmed that marijuana is a super plant that can offer so much more to the medical world. But Prof. Mechoulam’s work to uncover these new and exciting possibilities with cannabis has led many other researchers to pay even more attention to medical marijuana.
Prof. Mechoulam was the most prominent academic who deciphered the active properties of cannabis plants in the 1960s. His work at the Weizmann Institute enabled the discovery of the human endocannabinoid system, which earned him the title of father of cannabis research.
The latest discovery by the passionate 88-year-old researcher claims that cannabidiolic acid is a far stronger compound than THC or CBD. The best part is that it has no known side effects. Prof. Mechoulam claims that the world needs new drugs to fight numerous diseases, and while some of these proposed drugs are available, they have serious side effects.
He was referring to the non-natural pharmaceutical drugs that are not “semi-synthetic”. He adds that today there are two groups of compounds that need to be replaced: opioids and steroids. He believes marijuana can replace these drugs.
Marijuana as an alternative pharmaceutical solution to opioids and steroids
For many years, CBD has always been viewed as an alternative to other addictive prescription drugs. The EPM’s patent on the use of cannabidiolic acid is the groundbreaking idea that proves that drugs can be substituted without significant changes in their effectiveness.
Prof. Mechoulam said his team compared their association with cannabinoids and many other topical drugs used today. He went on to explain that regarding IBD, the team compared their connections to two other conservative products. One of these products was prednisone (steroids0 and the second a biological drug. Both proved that the activity in Prof. Mechoulam’s substance is similar to that of the collective.
He is optimistic that one day there will be a cannabidiolic acid derivative similar to CBD on the market. He also warned of the importance of carefully grouping and regulating drugs for medical purposes in order to avoid undesirable side effects.
The father of cannabis urges companies to be careful about what they call “therapeutics”. He advised that such substances be included in accordance with the established rules in order to ensure consistency with the pharmaceutical language. He fears that several people are mistaking recreational products for drugs and not looking for specific dosage guidelines.
The idea that cannabis could become a legal and suitable alternative to any drug was unthinkable for many years, but today we are talking about it. In the case of cannabis, the circle has not yet come full circle, because if Prof. Mechoulam is still doing research, he will see even more potential. Yes, more studies and tests need to be done, but one thing is already certain: medical marijuana has an important and transformative role in the future of oncology studies. If there is a Nobel Prize for Dr. Mechoulam?
Bottom line
There is so much focus on medical marijuana and what it has to offer to patients dealing with certain diseases lately. Of course, millions of people are against recreational cannabis, but the same groups are curious about the effects medicinal cannabis has on their health.
The cannabis story is almost the same narrative everywhere: flagellate something until it is to your benefit, then withdraw your opinions. Today the world pays great attention to the work of dedicated researchers like Professor Raphael Mechoulam, as there is hope that cannabis may be exactly what cancer patients need to survive. Hope is the first sign of complete healing.
