Mexican drug cartels are insane and marijuana legalization is their new battlefield
For the “war on drugs” to exist, there has to be an enemy.
In the War on Drugs, that enemy is the “drug cartel”. That used to be “the mafia” during the alcohol ban and just like the mafia – drug cartels can be ruthless!
Ever since Nixon signed that little paper and made drugs public enemy number one, there has been a relentless tug-of-war between law enforcement and cartels.
The cartels would transport, fly, and ship tons of drugs across the 1954 mile stretch of land that separates the United States and Mexico by an imaginary line and the surrounding oceans and airspace.
The US government would increase its budget, find new ways to fight back, block some routes and arrest a handful of cartel members.
Then, in the early 2000s, the United States convinced Mexico in Merida to wage its own “war on drugs” to fight cartels in its home territory. The idea is that the limit is insurmountable – and that it would be best to attack it.
This is very similar to what the US did in Colombia in the 1970s and 1980s. Besides Mexico, it has 130 million inhabitants and borders the USA, while Colombia has 51 million inhabitants and is separated from the USA by other countries.
The cartels in Mexico were far superior to those in Colombia and have a lot more money. Since the Mexican cartels are the gatekeepers to the US, all other Latin American cartels have to pay tribute in one way or another to let the drugs and other contraband through.
Needless to say, Mexican drug cartels are a force to be reckoned with … already caught in hundreds of cities and towns across the United States.
This is really a direct consequence of the drug ban – and as long as we continue to restrict drugs illegally and to the black market – the cartel presence will only increase.
Hell, I’m almost certain there is at least one Congressman or Senator on the cartel’s payroll.
But wait – there is more!
If you think the cartel’s long reach is something to worry about, wait until you hear what they’ve been up to lately.
You see – the cartel, no matter what it does – are innovators. With the full force of the US against their operations, they have to be creative.
They created trebuchets to bring drugs over the border wall. They often send submarines, planes, swimmers, and anything else they can do to smuggle their contraband.
But they are also building their arsenal to defend their territory from the law and rival gangs. One of the latest developments in cartel warfare is the use of armed drones.
Check out this excerpt from The Courier Journal, which talks about a recent battle with cartels and their weapons;
“It started as a routine operation: the Mexican police cleared blockades of organized crime groups in El Aguaje, a city in western Mexico that has become a battlefield for drug cartels.
Suddenly, the authorities said, a drone flew over, dropped a gunpowder bomb and injured two members of the Michoacan state police in the arms and legs.
The April attack highlighted an emerging threat in the international fight against illicit drugs – armed drones. “
The Buzz of Death will escalate things …
Can you imagine hearing the hum of death fly overhead and the next moment – BOOM! Your leg is torn to pieces!
Yes, that’s exactly what happens, and if we’ve learned anything from history, we know that if the cartels do it – the police will soon do it.
That is my main concern about this “war on drugs”, aside from the fact that it is a hideous violation of our personal rights and makes drugs more dangerous for consumers – but also because it escalates violence and the innocent bystanders are us.
But how do you stop a monster like the cartel?
It wasn’t long ago that mafiosos were running around with Tommy Guns and shooting into stores in the middle of the day. What have we done to contain their power?
Oh – legalized their main source of income and focused on their other illegitimate businesses. Slowly but surely, the presence of the mafia – although still a threat in some areas – has become far less of a threat these days.
Damn, they are doing reality shows about them now!
Can you imagine the “real housewives of the Sinaloa cartel” in a decade or two?
The point is – legalization has cut off the Mafia’s main source of income. While they still made money in gun ownership, extortion, kidnapping, contract killing, and human trafficking, these industries are far more difficult to hide.
Did you know that human trafficking is the second largest illegal market in the world after drugs? In other words, people are still a greater good than weapons in the world!
That’s damn it!
And we still hunt people who use drugs? How does that even make sense!
Regardless, the government is still very persistent in prosecuting the cartels and, as a result, their gun violence is escalating.
Soon police drones will be patrolling the neighborhood, perhaps armed with fully automated or “non-lethal” deterrents like tranquilizers or some other insane dystopian nightmare scenario.
I understand the need to keep people safe and secure – but if the policies you are implementing increase this level of warfare in urban areas, you are actually doing the opposite.
It is high time lawmakers took responsibility for the shitty policies their predecessors put in place in the name of “Morals & Safety”.
The Mexican drug cartels are ruthless monsters who have no problem creating chaos and fear in society and they should be stopped!
But we must remember that it was the war on drugs that made them so powerful. It’s time to end the madness, it’s time to end the war on drugs, get rid of the Controlled Substance Act – and rethink the way we did shit – because the current way, on that we find ourselves doesn’t bode well for either of those involved.
