9 Cartoon Characters Who Probably Smoked Weed
Stoners were found in cartoons before Popeye first slurped “spinach.” Cannabis is part of our collective culture, it’s mapped into our DNA. Even if you’ve never consumed it, chances are you’ve seen a part of yourself in one of the many relatable stoner-implied characters from your favorite jokes. But since you have to know one, many of the sexiest characters fly under the radar.
For every obvious personification of the Shaggy/Scooby Doo slacker, there’s a couch-locked Snorlax, a medicinally-powered Eeyore, and a highly functional Jane Lane/Daria Morgendorffer crew. The last few decades of animated programming fit perfectly with the widespread normalization of cannabis, and the requisite animated stoner has become an expected supporting character, if not the main character.
Here are a few animated characters that we’re happy to assume take part in the occasional puff-puff pass, and some varieties that might help you get up to their level.
Futurama: Roast
Phillip J. Fry grew up in New York in the 1980s. He was on a breakdance crew, he delivered pizzas on a bike, and he had an adorable dog. We smoked all the mids from an acrylic bong with this guy.
Fry’s Strain: It was probably a Northern Lights B-bud bred by someone’s cousin. Ah, memories.

Adventure Time: Marceline
If you’ve heard Marceline the Vampire Queen’s repertoire, you’ve probably already caught a glimpse of her cool, art-stoner aesthetic. Homegirl wrote an entire epic ballad that turned intense feelings of parental abandonment into a parable about a father who steals his daughter’s hot fresh fries. Iconic stoner art girl demeanor, really.
Marceline’s variety: your favorite variety? Red Congolese of course.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Patrick
Patrick feels like the ultimate affable, cuddly stoner. The friend you got silly high with, ate a bunch of food, and then babbled on until you both laughed yourself to sleep.
Patrick’s Strain: It kind of feels like a full-spectrum cannabinoid broth that keeps a bag of Harlequin in the stash jar in case it gets too spacy.

Hey Arnold!: Grandpa Phil
This guy has been throughout Hey Arnold! about how much of a baked hippie he was.
Grandpa Phil’s Strain: Considering the number of times he mentioned how many brain cells he lost in his “adolescence”, I would consider Phil a fan of strains like Alaskan Thunderfuck or Purple Chemdog.

Clarence: Chad
Cartoon Network’s Clarence features a father figure named Chad whose suggested stupidity is an ongoing but healthy joke. Initiated viewers can even catch a glimpse of his stash when the two go on a camping trip in season one and an open glove box momentarily reveals a zippered bag half-filled with greenery.
Chad’s tribe: What’s in his bag? Most likely Pineapple Express.

We Bare Bears: Polar Bear
Ice Bear is the polar bear of this program’s titular trio of brothers/roommates. His monotonous pace, unwavering temper and uncompromising charisma are literally chill AF – plus, Ice Bear lives in a freezer.
Ice Bear’s Strain: He probably smokes weed strains like Ice Cream Kush, Ice Cream Cookies, and Ice Cream Cake, but whether he’s hot-boxing the freezer or not, this character is clearly imbued with impeccable stoner energy.

The Simpsons: Otto
Otto, an elementary school bus driver who stumbles out of a culinary joint called Stoner’s Pot Palace and mutters, “That’s blatant false advertising, man,” will never be unfunny.
Otto’s Strain: Despite being presented as more of a cautionary tale than an ambitious stoner, I still think Otto would smoke top-notch bud. Probably something from the Cheese family.

Jem and the Holograms: The Misfits
Jem and the holograms might have been the headliners, but all the cool kids wanted to hang out with the misfits, the holograms’ nemesis and perennial bag girl archetypes.
The Misfits Tribe: These ladies partied in parking lots, hooked up with whoever they wanted, and smoked so much LA Confidential before their shows they should have been given a key to the city.

The Amazing World of Gumball: Richard Watterson
The stoner’s guard as a comedic trope has really evolved to fit the era, as evidenced by Richard Watterson, animated father of three, including Gumball’s title character. Richard is a good-natured, airy dad that anyone familiar with healthy stoner dads would instantly recognize. He eats everything, he sleeps everywhere, he understands next to nothing, but he loves his family.
Richard’s Strain: To me, he sounds like a dad who just dabbed an uplifting white papaya.
