8 Strains That Made FloraCal Farms Popular
In the last flower hall we bounced around and caught fire from many different brands. A brand that ranks me with good weed? FloraCal Farms.
The FloraCal team offered a small quad box with four different strains and inside was a heater called Bananas Foster. Not knowing much about them, I reached out to Teddy Moran, Senior Category Manager at FloraCal Farms and Cresco Lab for more information about the brand.

The origin story of FloraCal Farms
FloraCal Farms was founded circa 2012-2013 by Drew and Karen Duval. The couple had deep roots in Sonoma County as one of the first people to bring indoor growing to the area. In fact, the brand was the first licensed indoor cultivator in Sonoma County.
“Our founders, Drew and Karen Duval, were pioneers among our friends when it came to indoor growing in the Sonoma County area during Prohibition,” said Moran Blume outdoors. All the hippies left the Bay Area under law enforcement, went into the back-to-land movement, and started growing cannabis in the sun.”
Around 2014, FloraCal began packaging its buds in branded packaging and over time grew into the indoor cannabis giant. And just a few years later, in April 2019, it was announced that FloraCal had been acquired by Cresco Labs, one of the largest cannabis companies in the world. “It was the biggest cannabis merger of all time at the time,” Moran said. In 2020, the acquisition of Cresco was completed.
Since its inception, there has been a plethora of strains that have contributed to the success of the indoor brand. These are the strains that produced FloraCal Farms.
The stems from which FloraCal Farms was made
2014 – 2018: Platinum OG
Moran tells us, “We were pushing a lot of Platinum OG back then. Lots of Fire OG. Very OG centric. These strains were hot in NorCal back then. Lots of friends had the Platinum OG shaded and traded.”
Platinum OG is an indica-dominant hybrid. She is a Super Kush created by crossing Master Kush, OG Kush and an unknown third strain. Its aroma and flavor are what you’d expect from anything OG-dominant: gassy, funky, citrusy, piney, and all-round kushy.
In terms of effects, Platinum OG lays me down with a heavily relaxing – and somewhat drowsy – experience. The three most commonly reported effects of Platinum OG are relaxed, giggly, and sleepy.
2014 – 2018: Grandpa Lila
“We also had one of the best Granddaddy Purple cuts I’ve ever seen. We still have the genetics,” Moran said.
Granddaddy Purple, or GDP for short, is a legendary cannabis strain that has helped propagate purple strains around the world. It was developed by Ken Estes as a pain reliever.
GDP crosses Purple Urkle and Big Bud to create a highly relaxing Chemovar that has won numerous Cannabis Cups for Best Indica. It has a sweet and grapey taste, and the three most commonly reported effects are relaxed, sleepy, and euphoric.
2018 – 2019: MAC
“We found our own version of the MAC that’s a little different from Capulator’s Cut. FloraCal is bringing it back too.”
Miracle Alien Cookies, MAC for short, by FloraCal Farms is a cross between F2 Alien Cookies, a Colombian landrace, and Starfighter. It is an indica-dominant hybrid that is reported to make people relaxed, euphoric, and happy. Expect a strong diesel aroma and flavor in the smoke.
2018 – 2021: Sonoma Pie
In 2021 FloraCal Farms popped all kinds of seeds and looked for new, fresh and unique genes. Enter Julius and Kushlato.
Julius is a Seed Junky production. It’s Orange Kush Pop crossed with Sunset Sherbert. It smells of oranges and gasoline. Kushlato is Kush Mints crossed with Do-Si-Lato. “I know everyone still wants purple, but green grass is making a comeback. It’s strong, it hits you well and it’s super terpy,” Moran said.

2022: Gastro-Pop
Today, FloraCal still works with other breeders to find their best strain offerings, and one strain that’s next on the list is Gastro Pop.
Gastro Pop originally comes from a collaboration between Compound Genetics and Cookies. It’s a cross between apples and bananas with grape gas. You can expect it to have a mix of fruit and gas notes.
“From just one seed pack we found three phenotypes that we are going on with. One that definitely leaned towards the father, the apples and bananas; one leaning toward grape spirit; and one that was super unique will be our Gastro Pop #7.”
