7 types of hype without cookies

It’s that time of year when the best breeders and breeders in the world are preparing the latest and greatest flavors for the harvest season.

But this time around, Leafly set a challenge: pooling some hot new strains that are unrelated to the dominant GSC strain family. No gelato crosses are allowed. No Sunset Sherbert, no Animal Mints and no wedding cake allowed. So I made my way north to diversify the Leafly editor range before it was too late. Fortunately, it was exactly the right time of year.

One of the reasons autumn is so exciting is that many people use the beginning of the year to look for great new strains. So when we get to the big fall harvest, we’re talking about the latest wave of Primo potential. Don’t get me wrong, many large seed company breeding programs run indoors – the plants never, if at all, see the sun until they are ready to reproduce. While we’ll be giving some love to a few indoor killers not to be missed, most of the work that went into creating this list was done in the hills of northern California.

At Leafly, we love underrated seed companies, and Equilibrium is certainly one of them. First in Santa Cruz and not in the Emerald Triangle, Equilibrium Genetics has pumped out killers for years. Probably the most famous offering is the Malawi Confidential, with which Royal Key Organics dominated the LA flower market. The newest strain to look forward to is Maui Pineapple. It combines Swami Seeds 1979 Cherry Bomb Maui with a Laytonville Pineapple headband that provided the pollen for the project. Expect the Maui pineapple at the end of the harvest season – it’s lean sativa and ends late.

Alien Labs: Twins

Alien Labs Twins (Jimi Devine / Leafly)Alien Labs Twins (Jimi Devine / Leafly)

The twin is heat. Alien Labs had a big summer with billboards and so on in Sacramento, celebrating their new Biskante strain with Dracula weed hype. In addition, second place at Zalypmix in a field of 16 of the best breeders in California was certainly not to be taken lightly. But the summer of Biskante is coming to an end and the autumn of the twins begins. What sounds like a bad day for NASA is actually so hot that I forgot I smoked it. I’m usually very analytical about this stuff, but I mentioned that I put it on the homie here and he said, “Oh yeah, remember when we smoked this in Sacramento.” It was brutal. While Alien Labs nowadays is keeping genetics close to the chest to prevent copycats, Gemini certainly pays homage to the fiery OGs like Lemon Fuel that made Alien Labs famous during the medical age. But expect a little more funk compared to your standard OG.

Jungle Boys: SFVTK

The Jungle Boys are famous for producing some of the best cannabis strains in Los Angeles at their facilities. One of the things that helped them deserve that feather in their cap is the quality of the genetics they have worked with over the years. Whether their first propagation back then to find the WiFi or their own in-house breeding work, they have had many great results over the years. Her recent work with Triangle Kush has only added to the pedigree of everything. Many would argue that Triangle Kush is the original OG that made its way to LA. We had to rely on the SFV-TK from this pack of new varieties that had arisen through the work. It’s a pairing of San Fernando Valley OG Kush and Triangle Kush and basically one of those super OGs that has a lot of pine and other things going on about the fuel notes in the aroma. It’s a real OG high for sure, not sleepy, but a lot of effect.

Molecular Farms: Canned Peaches

When it comes to exotic terpene profiles, there are few more interesting right now than Peach Preserves. What makes it so special Bred and phytologically bred by Molecular Farms, the strain was literally the most unique entry to the Emerald Cup last year. The folks at SC Labs who run all of the cup tests said his terpene profile was the most remote of anything that was entered. In a world where everyone grows a lot of the same genetics, it’s essentially the most unique thing that has come up. The actual aroma itself is very different, almost like that of fruit and animal droppings. But when you roll it up it all blends in to a pleasant but not overwhelming taste, like something more gaseous or all of the detergent terpenes that are starting to peel off. The high is certainly a productive high, expect a cerebral experience rather than a full bodied one.

Symbiotic Genetics: Champaya

After launching some of the biggest waves of the 2010s when they pumped out Purple Punch seeds for the masses and then grew Mimosa, people have always been intrigued by what Budologist and The Village are up to at Symbiotic Genetics. This year, Champaya is the pony the team is betting a lot on. The variety combines papaya with its famous Mimosa V6. Symbiotic made the seeds about a year ago but is currently in the process of searching for their new favorite cross with Lady Bug Farms. Expect the winner to be really special.

Dying Race: Sweet Serenade

How could a combination of two of the biggest cuts of the last decade in Mendocino not make it onto the list? OG Eddy would support one of the pairings of the decade in OZ Kush. Nowadays, tons of companies are working with Dying Breed Seeds and changing the name, but the original OZK is still holding up strong, as the popularity of Wonderbrett’s version clearly shows. The roze was technically more award-winning, but better is not the right word. The first offering from the second generation of Zkittlez crosses would win the Breeder’s Cup at the Emerald Cup 2017 and take second place overall. The final decision between Roze and Lemon Crush this year was considered one of the great jury debates at the Emerald Cup. So, when talking about Sweet Serenade you need to understand that it comes from a genetic lineage, so even most cannabis enthusiasts would need a flowchart to obtain it.

Cali-X: Shortcake

Without a doubt one of the cutest offerings on the list, Cali-X’s Shortcake combines Raspberry Kush with the icon from the other side of the pond, Cheese. Aside from the Blue Cheese paired with DJ Shorts Blueberry, I haven’t found many Cheese crosses that go with the cute bill. I don’t want it to sound like I’m putting the shortcake under the standard San Francisco dessert weed bill, like the gelatos or sherberts that dominate our minds when we hear this phrase, but it certainly would come out of dinner on the same wagon.
