7 types of hops for Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest isn’t taking place in Germany this year, but that doesn’t mean you can’t smoke the way it is. Just as beer is made from hops and has that hoppy smell and taste, so can cannabis. Both cannabis and hops contain similar plant terpenes that create a hoppy aroma, largely due to the terpene humulene. Hops also contain myrcene and beta pinene, which are found in many strains of cannabis.

To celebrate Oktoberfest wherever you are, here are a few strains of cannabis that are known to have high levels of terpenes that almost mirror an IPA.

AND Kush

When we talk about hops, it should be noted that it would be quite difficult to hold your nose on a strain of cannabis and see just hops. Some varieties have a funky aroma mixed with a hop aroma mixed with a pine aroma mixed with … you know what I mean? Anyway, OG Kush is a strain that is high in humul and might hit your nose with some hoppy vibes. Strains with OG Kush in them and strong influences from the plant will have it too.

OG Kush is one of the most famous cannabis strains of all time. Its potency and uniqueness set the bar for cannabis on the west coast long ago. We still ride his genetics today. You are expected to get super high, not Rick Ross, and that’s really all you need to know to choose this strain to celebrate Oktoberfest.

GSC is the descendant of F1 Durban Poison and OG Kush. It is also known to be high in humulene. GSC will hit you with a loud aroma that is a mix of almost anything cannabis can produce. It’s funky, it’s sour, it’s lemony – it’s even dessert-like.

As for the effects, on some pure GSC or even Thin Mint GSC, you’ll sit back and say, “Wow, that’s what weed is supposed to feel like.” Weedmaps reviews say the best GSC effects are happy, relaxed, and euphoric, and the top flavors are earthy, lemon, and citrus.

Headband

Headband is something fire. The terpenes aside, what you really need to know is that headband is not meant to be played with when it comes to effects. I remember smoking something for the first time in 2012 and thinking, “Oh my god, yo. This is not the stem and seed feel we used to have. What the hell is that?!”

Headband is a legendary strain of cannabis. One of those who will always recognize true, everyday smokers by name. It’s named for a cerebral high that feels like your head is engulfed in euphoric petrification. Headband is a cross of OG Kush and Sour Diesel, so it makes sense that it should have a similar taste and terpene profile to these two.

White window

White Widow is a strain from the 90s. It has a heavily peppery, earthy smell and taste, and is one of the original strains that defined the kind of effects people expect when they buy a pure hybrid. Not an indica oriented, not a sativa oriented, pure hybrid.

This hybrid was originally bred by Green House Seed Company, one of the pioneers in variety breeding. It consists of the genetics of Brazilian land races and South Indian land races. It’s a great strain for anyone who wants to smoke all day but doesn’t let the intensity of the THC let them down too much. White Widow was used to create other popular strains such as Berry White and White Fire OG (also known as WiFi, WiFi OG).

Candy land

Candyland – sometimes called Candyland Cookies – is a special strain as it is a sativa that beats like an indica. It’s a perfect example of why you can’t always follow these differences in terms of the types of highs you want.

Candyland crosses Granddaddy Purple and Platinum GSC. It will definitely leave you stoned for hours; however, the high will be super uplifting and energetic. Although Candyland contains hoppy humulene, the other terpenes of this terpene combine to create an earthy, sweet taste.

GG4

GG4, better known as Gorilla Glue # 4 or simply Gorilla Glue, is known to be loud, sticky, and potent. It contains humulene and has a somewhat hoppy odor; But more than that, it has an odd, horny chocolate and nut type terpene profile that will really send your senses on a ride the moment you open a GG4 jar. If you smoke, dab, or vape this strain, you can expect it to be super euphoric, relaxing, and on time as you will be so stoned that all you want to do is sit back, chill, and smile about life . Smoke it for Oktoberfest and imagine putting on fresh lederhosen in Munich.

Death star

At the bottom of that list is Death Star, one of my personal favorite of all time. It’s one of those I never have to question; it will kick my ass and couch-lock me every time. Couch-lock is that super high, sleepy feeling that is just as easy to go to sleep because the struggle to keep your eyelids open is exhausting in itself. Death Star does that. Genetically, it is a cross of Sensi Star and Sour Diesel, where this humulene most likely came from. It’s earthy, gaseous, hot – everything you could want in a badass cannabis strain.
