7 questions about Germany’s weed legalization answered
With the upcoming changes in Chancellor and ruling parties in Germany, there will certainly be some new guidelines that one will have to get used to. Fortunately for Germans, grass is one of them.
Soon the country will bid farewell to current longtime leader Angela Merkel and welcome a future that includes the sale of legal recreational cannabis.
And while we’re still waiting for some details to be cleared up, here are some of the questions we can answer about the upcoming legalization of cannabis in Germany.
Who is responsible for legalizing weeds in Germany?
The news of the legalization of cannabis in Germany comes from a unique three-way government between the Social Democratic Party, the Greens and the FDP.
The coalition came together during Angela Merkel’s 16-year term as Federal Chancellor and is led by her successor, Olaf Scholz.
When will weed become legal in Germany?
The new coalition announced the plan to legalize cannabis in a formal agreement last week on November 24th. Scholz will take over from Merkel as Chancellor in December, and the German Bundestag is expected to vote on the agreement in early 2022 when leisure time sales begin in Germany.
Where can you buy weed in Germany?
German cannabis will only be available in licensed stores. According to current law (before Scholz), the consumption and personal possession of cannabis in small quantities is decriminalized in Germany, but it cannot be bought or sold legally.
There has been a medical cannabis program since 2017, which is considered to be one of the largest medical cannabis programs in Europe.

Boris Jordan of Curaleaf is on the board of directors of Bloomwell Group – a European holding company “for medical cannabis companies and possibly for companies in a recreational market that may be legal in the future”.
The Bloomwell Group received the highest publicly known seed investment ever for a European cannabis company in October 2021.
How will the German government know if the cannabis program is working?
The three-party coalition, also known as the “traffic light coalition” because of its organizational colors, announced that it was planning to review the effects of cannabis legalization in Germany just four years after it came into force.
This assessment will take into account the effects of legal cannabis on German society.
Are the German police on board with cannabis legalization?
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like that. In October 2021, the head of the German Police Union (GdP) described cannabis as a “dangerous” drug. The chairman of the German Police Union (DPolG) was quoted as saying: “It would be the beginning of a stoned future instead of the departure into a modern Germany.”
