3 cannabis challenges for the seasoned stoner
As many of you should know by now, cannabis is a wonderful tool for personal development and self-discovery. I have personally been using it in this capacity for more than 15 years and have seen my relationship with the plant evolve in the same way.
However, when cannabis becomes routine, the magic of marijuana is lost and what was intended as a tool for personal exploration and development becomes a crutch to carry and cater to your “inner bitch”!
If you’re in a cannabis rut where smoking has become routine and “it’s not really good for me” or “I’m not getting really high” are common thoughts… the following article will help you get back into it the plant.
Cannabis is a powerful tool, but only the wise understand how to use it effectively.
Challenge 1: The Terrence McKenna T-Break
Terence McKenna was an American ethnobotanist and mystic who advocated the responsible use of naturally occurring psychedelic plants.
He has spoken and written on a variety of subjects including psychedelics, plant entheogens, shamanism, metaphysics, alchemy, language, philosophy, culture, technology, environmentalism, and the theoretical origins of human consciousness.
Terence had this intriguing method of using marijuana where he would abstain from consuming weed for a few weeks to lower his tolerance; He then took a large dose and chilled in complete silence in a dark room to feel the full power of the plant.
The T-Break itself will be a challenge for many and some may fail at it. This would also be a good point to reflect on your relationship with cannabis. Understanding how dependent you are on cannabis is a great way to learn more about yourself. Abstinence will reveal what weed is “covering/treating” in your life. The most intense part of the experience is the first 24 hours, and if you can make it to 72 hours you can pull through 14 days.
In any case… .
So where to start? Basically, you need to get weed out of your system for 14 to 21 days to get a proper tolerance break. You can make it longer if you want, but at least 2 weeks should be more than enough to feel 90% of the full effects of weed.
Once it’s “D-Day” aka “Doob Day,” you’ll have to decide whether to take the edible route or the toking route. If you want to smoke, roll some blunts or joints, maybe grab a dab or bong. You will keep smoking when you feel “stoned”, you will “overconsume” your normal dose.
If you choose the edible route, the journey could be more intense. Edibles get you 10x higher and it can be an incredibly powerful psychedelic experience. You know all those “emergency room visits” you hear about on the news — it’s because people gave up edibles and couldn’t handle their shit.
Be prepared for the unexpected and remember…
Water is essential on this inner journey. We all know that if you’re not hydrated enough, taking a heavy dose can lead to dry mouth. Make sure you are well hydrated and have enough electrolytes in your system. It is highly recommended to always have a bottle of water by your side.
The weirdest thing people could expect from this challenge is the dark silent room, believe me it’s definitely the most exciting part of the challenge. You sit comfortably, with no distractions in sight, hearing nothing but your heartbeat, surrounded by things that give you a real sense of comfort and security. Attitude is important!
To make the experience easier, engage in something active, BREATH! However, since you are sitting in the dark.
Sit down and breathe slowly, inhale for 5 seconds and then exhale for 6 seconds and repeat until you feel centered and relaxed. This prevents panic from creeping in and keeps your nervous system stable. When you experience an intense weed hit in the dark, shit can get scary!
You will be going through the thought fields and whatever dwells in your subconscious, but remember, as long as you are relaxed and enjoying the mystical experience in your mind and body, you will be fine. No one has ever died from a cannabis overdose, and if you’re suffering from anxiety, just get your breathing back.
Try to be mindful and enjoy your journey within. If you want to take something away from the experience, you must write down the ideas and illuminations that have come to you, and believe me, they will come! Of course, do this after experience. Throughout the process, just let every thought and feeling come up…
Challenge 2: Stoned Yoga
Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual discipline that originated in ancient India and involves breathing exercises and postures called asanas.
These asanas and breathing exercises work on the body, mind and spirit and promote the balance and health of the body, mind and spirit.
Dee Dussault is an internationally recognized leader in the cannabis-infused movement.
In 2009, Dee became the first person to offer public cannabis-infused yoga classes in the West.
A few years later she authored the Harper Collins bestseller Ganja Yoga and from then on began training others in her methodology.
Stoned yoga is exactly what it sounds like: eating edibles or smoking marijuana before practicing.
According to ancient texts, this is not new: yogis have used herbs to supplement their practice for millennia.
Both yoga and weed, Dee writes, “involve a shift in consciousness that allows one to become more open to psychological, emotional, and energetic states that don’t typically function in daily life.”
There are several benefits that can be obtained from practicing stoned yoga. The most common benefits are:
-
Increased relaxation and concentration; makes the experience more meditative and enjoyable.
-
Improved coordination and balance, leading to better yoga form and preventing injuries.
-
Increased self-awareness, which can make it easier for practitioners to identify specific aspects of their practice that need improvement.
-
Reduced feelings of anxiety during the experience, making the yoga practice more enjoyable.
Let’s talk about how.
There are different levels to this practice but fortunately there are no strict rules, as long as you practice your yoga safely without overdoing it you should be more than fine.
You can take the edibles either 30 minutes or an hour before your set depending on how you know yourself and how it affects you. Again, everyone is different, so only you can really know what’s best for you.
Practice makes perfect so I would recommend starting out slow the first time, testing the waters and then going higher and higher each time you practice until you find your sweet spot.
Here are some tips to make your experience more enjoyable:
-
Use weed for yoga at home. This allows you to do your exercises in a comfortable environment without worrying about what others are thinking or having to leave the class early if it gets too intense for you. There are many online teachers. I personally like Tim.
-
Different strains have different effects. Indica-dominant strains are generally more lethargic and relaxing, while sativa strains tend to be energizing.
-
Don’t overdo your practice when using cannabis in any form, make sure to be mindful when doing yoga and be aware of your physical limitations.
-
And finally, moderation is key! This is applicable to almost everything in life and should not be overlooked. If you consume too much, trust me – you will feel it!
Try to let go of your everyday scenarios playing out in your head, focus on your breath and fully immerse yourself in the experience.
Challenge 3: The Heroic Dose (Greening Out)
We accidentally talked about “Greening Out,” but why the hell would you want to do it consciously? While this is related to the Terrence T-Break, the Green Out is an intentional overdose. It’s not necessarily a “fun” experiment…but ask anyone who’s ever choked up if they’ve learned shit about themselves…most of them will say yes!
Each person’s body is unique, we differ in genetics, environment and our endocannabinoid systems.
Greenout is difficult to predict. It’s more likely to happen to people who are new to cannabis or don’t use it often.
It could also occur in consumers who are deprived of sleep, hydration, or food, or when cannabis is consumed in certain forms, such as edibles and dabs, that exhibit high potency.
The majority of cannabis users have a history of eating a pot brownie that was way too strong.
Luckily, cannabis in any form or amount is not life threatening and there have been no cases of overdose, so the greenout will not kill you or harm your body in any way.
This third challenge is not for the faint of heart, Greening Out is purposely not made for everyone, but it represents a wonderful opportunity for experienced cannabis users to reach new heights and find a wild adventure within themselves.
It is recommended to have at least 3 edibles in one sitting, buckle up and let go! But you could also do the “Joey Diaz 1,000 mg dose” and call it a day!
The experience can suddenly become extremely intense, it may even seem scary at times, but rest assured and remember that it’s all in your head. Well, not all in your head, your body will probably feel weird too, but remember this breathing exercise – yes, it will be your friend!
Focus on breathing deeply and consciously, and the uncomfortable feelings will slowly fade as you focus more on your high and how good and refreshing it feels to be in such a raw, chaotic, yet euphoric state.
When greening out, I recommend staying with a buddy you can trust, drinking plenty of water and getting plenty of rest, and the physical symptoms should be gone by the next morning.
That’s the beauty of cannabis, no matter how intense the experience, you’ll eventually come out of it unscathed.
However, don’t think that this will only be “fun”. It could be! But it could also be a deep learning experience that shows you another side of cannabis.
If you love exploring hidden parts of your subconscious, stumbling where no one has gone before, exploring the unknown and getting high as f*ck straight away, then Heroic Dose is for you.
If done right it should leave you with a deeper respect and appreciation for the cannabis plant and bless you with a new perspective on life in general, as I said before each person is unique and each experience brings its own messages and symbolism with itself to the consumer. You may even quit smoking weed for a bit afterwards, but it’s definitely something you should experience.
Terence McKenna used to say, “Take it easy, dude, but take it”
