Wiz Khalifa, Rihanna, Ricky Williams and weed memes

So far in 2022 there have been some big stories in weed and pop culture, and we’re hardly into spring! Check out these pop culture moments and stay up to date with what’s hot with our Pot Culture Ground-up.

Rap superstar Wiz Khalifa uses his cultural influence to make $45 million from legal cannabis.

Here’s what Forbes had to say about Wiz’s 2021:

“Wiz Khalifa capitalized on the cannabis revolution with products like his Khalifa Kush (and got a big boost when he quietly sold some of his releases in April).”

This is why it is important for the cannabis industry to:

Many legal cannabis brands use the cultural influence of music, sports, and entertainment to make their mark on consumers.

2020 Leafly Strain of the Year, Runtz and Multi-State Empire Cookies were created by independent rappers who are fluent on the web, on the streets and on balance sheets.

Like cannabis, the value of music to consumers is intangible. Without influencers like Khalifa, Berner and Yung LB, companies would not be able to trade these extremely valuable commodities. As the industry grows, it is important for everyone involved to honor and protect the ancient producer and vendor culture that made the legal industry possible. And never forgetting that many pioneers are still paying for the unfair criminalization of the plant while we reap the legal benefits.

Rihanna’s baby-induced weed break

Rihanna’s friends reportedly knew she was pregnant before she said anything. How? Because she stopped smoking weed.

This clip, in which the pop princess brushes off a paparazzi who blurted out, “You’re late,” as she arrived at a fashion show, suggests she wishes she could start one. “No shit,” she shot back immediately. Seems the world’s sexiest stoner has even less time for crap than usual.

The Wild Weed Tales of Highsman Founder Ricky Williams

Scientists are finally studying how weed affects professional and amateur athletes. But anecdotal data from athletes who have had to consume in the shade due to rules and stigma is also valuable for our understanding.

Brittney Griner Isn’t Alone: Here’s Why Pro Athletes Are Using Cannabis

NFL and NCAA record-breaker Ricky Williams was forthcoming about his experiences using the plant as a top athlete.

He revealed that he smoked prior to some of his most historic games in college and that he got caught up in the NFL’s drug problem due to a misunderstanding about testing schedules when he switched teams.

On the scars athletes face over grass:

“Growing up as an athlete, it was two parts. First, you have to be good at your sport. But secondly, you have to be good. You have to avoid trouble. And that means: stay away from drugs. I was trying to make it through the sports route, so I stayed away from drugs.”

He continued, “When I went to college, the boys just hung out, the high schoolers in the room played cards, dice, and they passed the blunt around … I hit it and I just realized it was cool.” We all just had a good time.”

He used cannabis moderately until his senior year in Texas. Williams could have left school and been a top NFL pick, but he went all out to win the college’s prestigious Heisman Trophy for the nation’s most outstanding player.

His senior season got off to a rough start on the field, and his girlfriend broke up with him and became the team’s starting quarterback. He felt dejected. Then his roommate pulled out a bong and put him on a historic trail.

“I went to my room and lay on the bed. And I realized that I wasn’t obsessed with the bad game. I wasn’t obsessed with my girl. I just felt good. And then I started thinking about positive things… True story, the next two weeks of this season (I ran for) consecutive 300 yard games.

Styles P (right) is interviewed by Jacobi Holland in February. (OnTheRevel)

In a startling interview with On the Revel, the man who gave us cannabis anthems like “Good Times (I Get High)” spoke candidly about the current state of the plant.

Styles P on when and why he started smoking:

“I’m a naturally fidgety person, I’m really anxious, I’m always moving, so cannabis kind of balances me out.”

On the need for social justice in the cannabis industry:

“Everyone I know in my neighborhood — we don’t grow damn weed. We all have (too) many arrests for pot. It’s the white guys who grow the greatest pot. I fucking love this.

I’ll just be honest: you guys grow the pot, you never go to jail for it, make loads of fucking money for it. We buy the weed you grow it’s ruining our future we get arrested for it now you have a felony and some misdemeanor now you can’t get a job.

How the hell do we solve this problem? By addressing the issue. Let’s figure out how to get some of these black kids some money for this damn pot.”
