Uber Eats is adding a Weed category to the app for collection in Ontario, Canada

The future is now for adult cannabis users in Ontario, Canada, with a new level of convenience. From Monday, Uber Eats customers will find a new cannabis category in the app to order and pick up. Orders are processed within one hour of the order being placed, which is initially only available to Ontario residents.

Uber Technologies Inc. will add Canadian cannabis retailer Tokyo Smoke to its marketplace on November 29th – allowing customers to browse, then place orders through the Uber Eats app, and finally the closest Tokyo Smoke store with dozens of locations across the province pick up . You can browse through a selection of cannabis products.

However, deliveries of grass are not allowed. Orders are for collection only. Uber Eats communications chief Meghan Casserly confirmed there will be no delivery to The Verge.

Reuters first reported the bold change to the policy as it gains market attention. “We will continue to monitor the regulations and opportunities closely, market by market. And as local and state laws evolve, we’ll explore opportunities with dealers who operate in other regions, ”the Uber spokesman told Reuters.

When asked about the expansion of the service to other Canadian provinces or the US, the spokesman said there was “nothing left to share at this point.”

The Tokyo Smoke-Uber collaboration will help Canadian adults legally buy cannabis safely, with the aim of tackling the thriving underground black market that still accounts for over 40 percent of all non-medicinal cannabis sales nationally, Uber added -Speaker added.

You can already order liquor through the Uber Eats app, and Uber executives focused on the burgeoning cannabis industry long ago.

Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber, told CNBC last April that the company would consider supplying cannabis when the legal coastline in the United States is clear. “When the way for cannabis is clear, when federal laws come into play, we will definitely be looking at this,” he said at the time.

Entering the cannabis market in Canada marks an early step for a large company like Uber, with steady growth forecast by several groups of analysts.

The company has been watching the cannabis industry for years. In 2014, Uber encouraged stoned drivers to use the app and avoid drug driving charges – amid new legal markets looming.

Former Uber CEO Leandre Johns joined the Flowhub leadership team as Chief Operating Officer (COO) last September. Flowhub offers innovative, modern tools like point-of-sale (POS) tools that have changed the cannabis space.

Uber eats collaboration with Tokyo Smoke

There are over 50 Tokyo Smoke locations scattered across Ontario, so locating a location close by is no problem for locals. Locations can also be found in Alberta, and the brand is also one of only four companies to be licensed to operate in Manitoba.

High Times singled out Tokyo Smoke as a top brand in our December issue. “Your shopping experience should be just great,” the company said. The cannabis store chain grew significantly in 2021, with locations popping up to the left and right.

Tokyo Smoke was founded in 2015 by father-son duo Alan and Lorne Gertner and is now owned by Canopy Growth. The interior design of the stores was praised by the media. Interior Design magazine, for example, highlighted one of Tokyo Smoke’s locations in Toronto. Part of the experience is selecting cannabis through Tokyo Smoke’s intent system: Go, Rise, Equalize, Ease and Pause.

Tokyo Smoke’s products are quality checked and can be traced back to a licensed manufacturer – in contrast to some other companies in the area.

Earlier in 2019, Acreage Holdings announced its intention to open Tokyo Smoke offices in the United States, expanding its footprint.
