Throwback: Hitting the rock bottom with Cupsy by Puffco

Editor’s Note: This review is the experience of Leafly Canada Editor Ashley Keenan. I received this product for free to inform my coverage, I have no share of the resulting sales or incentives from Puffco.

is it a cup Is it a bong? It’s a Cupsy!

Nothing tickles my stoner heart like a stealthy on-the-go smoke. Cannabis may be legal in Canada, but it’s far from normalized. While I’m grateful for how far we’ve come, it’s also nice that anonymity devices like these grant cannabis users.

If you’ve ever hidden your bong from your landlord or been disappointed with travel accessories; You will probably understand the appeal of this product. To try it out, I added water, filled the bowl with buds and took my Cupsy for a walk.

Cupsy is the size of a large coffee, medium if you’re a Tim Horton person. (Keenan/Leafly)

The professionals

  • discreet
  • portable
  • Slim design
  • Great mouthpiece

There aren’t many ways to enjoy weed on the go, and even less if you’re a bong fanatic (like me). This device is not only portable but also very discreet. I filled the bowl with weed that fits snugly in the storage compartment (no spills!) and it really felt like carrying a regular coffee mug.

Warning – you will try to drink from this cup at least once! Luckily, the mouthpiece isn’t a straw, so you won’t accidentally drink your own bong water.

Puffco is my personal favorite for vaping concentrates, although they did venture into a burn-based product with the Cupsy that was meant for flower rather than extract (seriously don’t try to use this as a dab rig).

If you work away from home, the Cupsy is a simple and unobtrusive way to enjoy a hit on the go. I work from home and wasn’t sure if I really needed another accessory to smoke weed. I work in the industry and am privileged to regularly enjoy the latest technology.

Since the pandemic, I’ve become a bit agoraphobic. I have all my bongs, pipes, vapes, dab rigs at home, but the Cupsy got me into a session and walking outside the walls of my house. Cupsy gave me a reason to get out and enjoy a relaxing moment for myself.

The materials in this sparkling water maker are well thought out and of high quality. The chamber is made of stainless steel and gives the smoke a cooling effect (like putting ice in the bong). The ceramic bowl ensures perfect combustion and preserves the aroma of the plant.

The mouthpiece offers an effortless draw. If you’re more of a small smoker like me, the mouthpiece closes and holds the smoke for your second hit. Overall, I found myself able to enjoy the session more without the fear of having to look over my shoulder at all times.

The disadvantages

  • bong water
  • Leak proof not leak proof
  • Weed storage is missing

The Cupsy is not without its flaws. My biggest issue with the design is that it’s not leak or odor proof. Cupsy is leak proof and certainly didn’t make a mess, but it can be difficult to store after use. I’m at the park, enjoying my bowl, and now I’m holding a coffee mug full of dirty bong water and burnt ash.

I skipped the water and put the cup in my pocket, which later smelled strongly of burnt grass ash (even with the mouthpiece closed). I suppose I could have carried it further, but it would have been nice to have a clip to make it hands-free when not in use.

The coffee cup design has a lot of space, it was a missed opportunity not to use the bottom inch for storage. I’m not a one and done girl, I like to enjoy 2-3 bowls and from the looks of it I had to bring an extra device to hold extra bud for refills.

Usage Tips

  • Use a coarser chopped cannabis, kief and bubble hash were too fine for the ceramic bowl. Good green can fall through the hole.
  • Don’t push the ceramic bowl into the lid too hard, I’ve had to do that on a number of occasions when the tight fit made it difficult to remove.
  • Think ahead if you want more than one bowl as you will have to ash and reload like a regular bong
  • If you have dexterity issues like me, it’s difficult to light and hold the Cupsy at the same time. It might take a few bowls to figure out what works best for you.

The final result

The Cupsy isn’t perfect, but it’s impressive and highly functional. There might not be a sneaky way to light it up when in use, but when I wasn’t actively watching I felt plush and stealthy. It’s nice to have an alternative to pipes and one-hitters along the way.

It’s just generally fun too, I use it when I’m at home too. There’s just something about it that adds to my experience. Maybe it’s the clean bong water, the cool steel or the mouthpiece that doesn’t make me feel like a fish.

The Cupsy has some serious beach, cabin and vacation vibes and will definitely be part of my sesh kit this summer.
