This state will again tackle the legalization of medicinal cannabis next year

A Republican state senator in Kansas plans to introduce a medical marijuana legalization bill in January, putting the state on the list of potential new U.S. cannabis markets that may be on the horizon.

State Senator Rob Olson will implement his measure once the state legislature reconvenes, according to National Public Radio, after chairing a special committee that considered medical cannabis issues earlier this year. The last meeting of the committee is scheduled for Thursday.

Olson said he hopes his colleagues in the state House of Representatives will also introduce a parallel bill.

Earlier this year, the Kansas House approved a bill to create a new medical marijuana industry, but an accompanying Senate measure died in committee.

However, the bill could face an uphill battle. NPR reported that Senate President Ty Masterson said he has other policy priorities, such as the state budget and school funding.

And Democratic State Senator Cindy Holscher said it was Masterson who stalled the medical cannabis bill earlier this year, implying he could be an obstructionist again in 2023.
