Prices are plummeting, but don’t you dare sell your legal weed on the black market, the Canadian government warns

Cannabis is fairly widespread in the United States of America due to the legalization of the plant/drug in many (more than half) of the states of the country. Cannabis is on track to be legalized nationwide at the federal level. However, the legalization of cannabis is not an American phenomenon. Countries like Canada as well as some European countries have moved to legalize cannabis. It will certainly soon be a worldwide movement.

Despite all of these developments, illicit cannabis markets still exist across the country, some of which stem from the regulations and restrictions placed on the legal cannabis market.

According to MJBizDaily, the Ontario Alcohol and Gambling Commission (AGCO), which oversees cannabis businesses, warned authorized sellers not to sell their stock to unlicensed third parties after the business closed. The notice was issued in relation to an offer by a company called LeafyThings Canada to buy the cannabis inventory of struggling stores.

WHAT OR WHO IS LEAFYTHINGS?

Leafythings, an online platform, mobile app and promotional channel focused on events, advertising and grassroots marketing, showcased seemingly illegal cannabis companies, delivery services and brands.

In September, in response to the difficult cannabis retail environment in Ontario, the Company implemented a Retailer Assistance Program.

Leafythings uncovered the lack of an effective, orderly closures policy for failed retailers and is presenting a retail assistance program in response to the expected spike in cannabis store closures in the Ontario marijuana market, the company said in a press release.

According to Jeffrey Neil, director of community engagement at Leafythings, the company will launch its cannabis retail store support program by buying all inventory from retailers who want to close their doors as soon as possible.

CANNABIS IN ONTARIO

The Ontario government has enacted regulations to bar children and youth from access to cannabis, keep public streets safe, and capture the black market.

Ontario has a strictly controlled private cannabis retail model.

Medical cannabis is controlled by the Canadian government and is always subject to different laws than recreational cannabis.

Ontario’s marijuana regulations generally conform to all federal laws as a result of the federal legalization of marijuana in Canada. Persons 19 years and older may purchase, possess and use both recreational and medical marijuana under existing Ontario marijuana regulations. There is a maximum limit of 30 grams of marijuana that can be possessed at one time per consumer.

Consumption of cannabis and its products is permitted under Ontario’s cannabis laws in the following locations: Public outdoor areas provided it does not violate other restrictions placed on consumption (e.g., consumption too close to a hospital, nursing facility, or school). Houseboats and vehicles, as long as this complies with the legal regulations and requirements for these vehicles. Designated smoking areas in motels and hotels. testing facilities and research laboratories. And other controlled and specially assigned consumption rooms.

On the other hand, smoking cannabis or vaping is still illegal in the following places:

Gated public areas, Indoor spaces not designated, Indoor common areas, Hospitals, hospices, nursing homes and other care facilities, Schools or other places where children frequently congregate, Public areas, Outdoor public areas in close proximity to bars, restaurants, government offices, entertainment and sports venues, recreation parks and facilities, covered outdoor areas such as bus stops and other restricted areas.

Medical cannabis is subject to different laws than recreational cannabis. The federal government alone controls the cultivation and distribution of medical marijuana.

WHERE IS IT SAFE TO BUY CANNABIS IN ONTARIO?

In Ontario, customers can now buy adult-use marijuana online through the public Ontario Cannabis Store, a division of the Liquor Control Board, since the drug has been legalized at the federal level. A website detailing Ontario’s legalization process is maintained by the retailer.

At first, the Ontario Cannabis Store was the only place where you could buy legal marijuana. However, the first brick-and-mortar stores started selling their products in April 2019. Finding cannabis is now much easier than ever in Ontario. According to national regulations, customers are only allowed to purchase a total of 30 grams, or just over an ounce, of dried cannabis at a time.

The only way to buy medical marijuana is online, by phone, in writing, or over the counter with secure mail delivery from a grower who has obtained a state license. In addition, Health Canada will issue you a permit allowing you to grow medical marijuana alone or with the help of another person.

UNLICENSED BUYING OF CANNABIS IN BULK BY THIRD PARTIES

However, the Leafythings program does not operate in the regulated market, according to an email the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario sent to authorized cannabis shops on Thursday and obtained by MJBizDaily.

The Ontario Alcohol and Gambling Commission said it believed this program was targeting cannabis dealers with the intention of requiring them to sell their holdings to unlicensed third parties who would then buy them in bulk after hours.

To prevent the diversion of licensed marijuana products onto the black market, licensed retailers are required to comply with the law. The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario or other law enforcement agencies may take action against you if you fail to properly dispose of your goods before the close of business.

FINAL EFFECT

The Ontario Alcohol and Gambling Commission has issued a warning to all cannabis retail stores in the state that appear to be closing and selling off the rest of their produce. A stern warning has been issued and shops caught breaking the rules should expect legal action to be taken against them as they would be breaking the law by selling to illegal third party buyers.
