Marijuana mobilization for Ukraine

As the war in Ukraine rages on, the majority of the free world stands united behind the nation and its leaders as its citizens and army fight Russian aggression. Their livelihoods, way of life, culture and people are being wiped out and their independence is in jeopardy.

We’ve seen industries around the world coming together to offer their support in a variety of ways, and it’s no shock to see that the cannabis community has mobilized to the cause. Unlike other industries that have been hit by supply chain disruptions due to the war, the cannabis industry in the United States is mostly unscathed. But that doesn’t mean it’s untouched.

SAN FRANCISCO DISPENSARY ON THE SUNFLOWER OF PEACE

San Francisco-based MediThrive Pharmacy CEO Misha Breyburg takes Russia’s invasion of Ukraine very personally. The fear he feels as he sees his hometown of Odessa crumble into a million pieces is almost too great. As the CEO of MediThrive Pharmacy in San Francisco and a Ukrainian-American citizen, he had more than enough motivation to look for a way to help.

One of the methods he chose was to donate the proceeds from a single day’s sales and 10% of the week’s total earnings to Sunflower of Peace, a Massachusetts-based non-profit dedicated to helping the Ukrainian people in the heart of Ukraine Russian invasion and providing medical and humanitarian aid to Ukrainians. In addition to donating to Sunflower of Peace, Breyburg hopes to start his own charity and personally take the proceeds to those most in need in Ukraine.

DETROIT POT AND PIEROGIES

In Detroit, cannabis store and grower Luxury Loud is partnering with Srodek’s Quality Polish Food for a Pot and Pierogi Ukraine fundraiser. Luxury Loud Will Donate 100 Percent Of Its March 13 Sales To UNICEF To Use For The Children Of Ukraine; At the same time, Srodek’s food truck gave free pierogi and kielbasa for a contribution.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is also personal for the directors of Luxury Loud. Technical director and breeder Marko Malinowski and his brother Christian Malinowski, one of the company’s partners, are Ukrainian Americans who are well known in the Detroit Ukrainian community.

Malinowski told the Detroit Free Press that it was a little more unique. And also that for some reason pot and pierogi catch people’s attention and they actually go well together.

Matteo Communications, a cannabis PR firm, is also raising money for Ukraine by making donations to one of the various organizations working to keep Ukrainians safe and secure. The company will match the posts via a social media campaign launched last week.

CANNABIS.NET CREATES A CUSTOMIZED T-SHIRT

WAR VETERANS HELP FEED UKRAINE

Cannabis manufacturing company Helmand Valley Growers, founded and controlled by war veterans, donates 100 percent of profits to a good cause – veterans. But for now, until at least the end of April, they are contributing their earnings to the World Central Kitchen, run by Jose Andres, which has had a presence in both Poland and Ukraine, feeding refugees.

Corey Potter, the sales director, said this situation is a humanitarian catastrophe not seen since World War II. In all the two years they have been in business, they have been fortunate to have had the support of so many. The entire cannabis community has really embraced her. Although not yet a household name, the compassion of strangers and their belief in our mission have enabled them to achieve much in a short space of time.

When they launched the brand, they made a commitment to each other that they would always use the platform they were given to encourage positivity, and hopefully this will encourage others to get involved in their communities, the director added. No time is a wrong time to do the right thing. They are glad they can help and hope others will get involved or find a charity of their choice to support.

The reason World Central Kitchen was chosen all started with a message about a mother from Ukraine who carried her disabled daughter non-stop for three days to escape an attack on a hospice train bound for Poland. She never stopped walking or put her daughter to rest. She kept walking until she got to the train.

Right after this story was another section that talked about the World Central Kitchen and the work they do to feed those in need around the world. A sense of hope overcame my utter anger as I saw their work along the Ukraine-Poland border, where they were helping to feed the refugees.

SUPPORTING THE MOST MARGINALIZED COMMUNITIES

A California cannabis producer called Like has decided to donate a portion of its March earnings to Hope for Ukraine, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping Ukraine’s most vulnerable citizens.

For co-founders Giovanni Humphries and Sergey Vasilyev, it’s all about community. The cannabis industry always leads by example when it comes to supporting one another. This is what makes the community and culture so promising and unique. They said they decided to donate a portion of their income from March to a nonprofit dedicated to helping Ukraine’s most vulnerable citizens because they know isolated communities are often hardest hit during these times.

FINAL EFFECT

The cannabis community, particularly that in the United States, is one of the few business communities unaffected by Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, as it does not depend on foreign parameters to function optimally. As a result, they are well resourced and support Ukrainian citizens through donations to charities set up to help with the Ukraine crisis and the World Central Kitchen.
