Justice Department May Have Cannabis Announcement in Days, No Interest in Marijuana Crimes in America

Justice Department uninterested in marijuana crimes to announce cannabis reform soon

Could the DOJ soon be making waves with an announcement of cannabis reform? According to Seeking Alpha and Marijuana Moment, Attorney General Merrick Garland clarified the department’s stance on prosecuting cannabis crimes in legal and illegal states. He says the department’s resources are better spent on violent crime and acts that harm society more than cannabis.

Recently, the DOJ opened an investigation into how the FBI calculates data on marijuana arrests.

As Seeking Alpha summarized his published interview:

Attorney General Garland wants to “save prosecutorial resources” on marijuana.

  • Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Justice Department’s resources are not being optimally used to prosecute marijuana-related crimes, whether or not states have laws legalizing cannabis on the books.

  • Garland, who appeared before a Senate subcommittee on marijuana issues in April, made the comments as part of written responses to Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii). Marijuana Moment first reported Garland’s responses.

  • Garland noted that the department’s resources should be better spent on “violent crimes and other crimes that wreak havoc on society and endanger our communities.”

  • The attorney general also noted that the DOJ may soon address marijuana issues more broadly. “The Department is investigating a number of issues related to marijuana and its production, sale and use, and we intend to address these issues in the coming days.”
