It’s official: Cannabis sales in New Jersey will start on April 21st (why not April 20th?)

Of Maureen Meihan

Legal cannabis sales in New Jersey may begin April 21, state officials announced. The state Cannabis Regulatory Commission will issue licenses to seven medical marijuana dispensaries, officially known as alternative treatment centers, which will also begin selling recreational cannabis beginning April 21.

The seven treatment centers are now ready to sell adult-use cannabis at 13 locations across the state. When they open, everyone decides for themselves.

“This is an exciting time for New Jersey,” said Jeff Brown, executive director of the Cannabis Regulatory Commission. “We have deliberately and consciously done everything to put the market on a good footing.”

Earlier this week, the commission granted alternative treatment centers, which are multi-state operators, the first permit to operate. These include Acreage Holdings, Ascend Wellness, AYR Wellness, Curaleaf, Green Thumb, Columbia Care, TerrAscend and Verano Holdings.

Company officials told NJ Advance Media that they all intend to open at least some of their facilities on April 21.

Why not on April 20th? to open?

A source representing one of the approved alternative treatment centers told NJ Advance none was ready to open Monday or Tuesday. But more importantly Wednesday is April 20th, “which regulators are trying to avoid at all costs when opening stores” for fear of running out of supplies. So said the source “Thursday is walking time.”

The alternative treatment centers have been licensed to sell recreational cannabis at their medical marijuana locations in various NJ cities.

Which shops open where?

A spokeswoman for Verano said late Thursday that the company plans to begin selling recreational cannabis at its Elizabeth and Lawrence locations on April 21.

Acreage intends to start selling at The Botanist Williamstown and The Botanist Egg Harbor on the 21st.

Under CRC guidelines, registered patients can purchase up to three ounces of medicinal cannabis/cannabis product.

Recreational users can purchase up to an ounce in a single transaction.

The CRC said it will post on its website a list of locations that will open on April 21 once alternative treatment centers have made their decisions.
